For sure and I was just pointing out the reasoning behind the rules as far as I understand it. Wasn't arguing, just adding to the conversation.
In terms of small market teams they tried to fix some of the issues with the salary cap/floor. It's working to some degree but there are things that are too difficult to fix. Many players will want to play in big markets, or for an original 6 team and it makes it difficult for smaller markets to attract and retain talent. There's nothing the league can do (that I can think of) to change that.
Having said that, there are some small market teams that do it well. Look at Carolina. They build from within, have a coach and management that players like to play for and they don't rely on signing big name free agents. Then you have Arizona who can't even keep a building for their team to play in. At a certain point it falls on poopty owners rather than the market. - SkjeiStadium
Vegas and Seattle haven’t had to build from within is kind of the crux of my argument. Every team in the NHL has built through the draft for the most part. Does Vegas even have a guy they drafted on their team right now? Idk I’m askin. They can’t have many if they do |

Well they've only been in the league for 5 years and they've continuously mortgaged the future to compete early on. It will catch up with them and they will need to rebuild like everyone else. Other teams that joined the league previously didn't pay close to the amount Vegas or Seattle did and because of that they got more favorable draft rules, combined with Tom's point that they took advantage of most GMs in the league at the time never having gone through an expansion and making poor decisions |

It was a new precedence too. The GMs didn’t want certain players picked. I think I’m more annoyed at Vegas’ fortunes than I am at Seattles. But I really hope neither of them win the cup.

I mean how different is Vegas with Petrovic, Foligno, and Fowler vs. Theodore, Smith, Marschault, and Tuch? |

Very different. I think that's the point. Yes they had favorable rules, for the reasons I mentioned in other posts, but you have to give credit for them doing what they did within the confines of those rules. |

They aren’t able to protect enough guys. I think it was 11? Should’ve been 12-13-14. One more at least
Granted this is all hindsight. Realizing a few years later. Their first year the Mandalay Bay shooting galvanized the team and city. So that helped them on the map right away. |

Yea I don’t blame McPhee or Francis. The setup was too favorable imo |

Right. That's my point. Mcphee wanted Petrovic, Foligno and Fowler. The 3 GMs of those teams panicked and gave him better players. I mean Alex Tuch was a 1st round pick of the Wild. Who was playing well in the AHL when the wild gave him away. So the Knights basically got a 1st for not taking Marcus Foligno because the Wild panicked. |

I'm not sure where I stand. On one hand it sucks seeing a brand new team have more success than the Rangers over the past few years, but I also don't think it's good for the league to have these expansion teams be second and third comings of Arizona.
I think if the owners agreed with you that Vegas had too favorable terms they would have changed them for Seattle. From a business standpoint the time that you are going to gain the most fans is when the team is new and you can build excitement. If the team sucks for 5-10 years before they even have a chance to compete you are going to lose a lot of that excitement and you never build that fanbase in a new territory which is the whole point of the expansion. |

It’s very easy to say all this now. Back then I thought the teams drafted were horrid lol. Just pay some dues related to pain in losing before reaching the finals once and now maybe twice. I don’t want the canes to win either so I’m left with Florida lol or Dallas. Who I think will win the cup, Dallas. I’m 0-4 tho |

Just win.
Winning solves all. And having an owner that's willing to spend up to/over the cap helps.
Took a few years of good results but the canes have sold out every game this year, have a season ticket waiting list, and ticket prices are steadily increasing now.

I remember when they sucked in Hartford. Jimmy and I went up there for a game in the 94 season and it was like a home game. Probably the best thing they ever did was move. You definitely have great fans down there. |

That's my point. Small market teams need to do things right and be successful to generate revenue and that is a continuous cycle. You win, the coach stays around, the players want to stay there, and the management can afford to keep the core pieces.
Bigger market teams will always have more resources and can bounce back relatively quickly from some bad years. Rangers are a perfect example. Guys like Fox, Trouba, Panarin, etc. wanted to be here and made that happen. You can argue the level of success we've had with them but it's certainly a lot better than we might've expected in 2017 when we blew everything up and missed the playoffs for a couple years.
Small market teams are able to compete just like everyone else because of the salary cap, they just have a lot less margin for error. Carolina is an example of a small market team doing it right, whereas Arizona is on the other end of the spectrum |

Right I just mean that eventually they aren't "Small market" anymore and it really sucks to see them all get painted with the same brush.
it also doesn't help the teams in those markets gain legitimacy at the local level when media and fans of the bigger, legacy teams poop on them at every turn and talk about how they shouldn't exist.

I think that's a fair complaint and is definitely true. Carolina and Arizona aren't in the same category either on the ice or from a fandom perspective. Didn't mean to come off as rude or dismissive or your team if I came across that way |

If your kids grow up to be Joe Pavelski congrats lol I think he may be my most respected player of all time. This guy is just unbelievable. He’s scored in 3 straight, that was after a 4 goal game like 2 weeks ago, and after getting his head caved in during rd 1 also. Oh and he’s 38 yrs old |
