Portland as a potential city? Like Seattle they have a long history of hockey in the area. |

I think they will try new markets before those two and if I were to guess a city getting another chance, it would be Atlanta especially if they could get black ownership involved.
From what I recall it was inept ownership that sunk the Thrashers and not so much the fan base. - Elbows15
True, Cleveland has such a storied history in the A, too bad when they had the team, the Arena was in the boonies and hard to get to.
Hatrford, I was just thinking because of the wealth of the area.
San Francisco/Oakland is a better choice than Sacramento. Might as well put the team in Indianapolis.
If you are going to open new markets, the largest that are left are
Atlanta (good call)
Houston
Orlando
Cleveland
Sacramento
Portland (could be a sleeper)
Indianapolis
San Diego
Salt Lake City

Hamilton's arena just closed for 2 year renovation - Junior team kicked out and forced to move to Brantford.
Leafs would never allow it anyway no matter how much in indemnification fees they were offered. If the Leafs or the Rangers want or don't want something, Comrade Bettman has to listen.
Buffalo would also object - large % of their gate comes from Canadian fans crossing the border on game nights.
Solution: Arizona is a useless revenue sharing bloodsucking franchise - mothball them permanently.

The main reason I think Salt Lake would be the best choice for relocation is the owner of the Jazz really wants a NHL franchise and is a big fan of the sport. I think he will do everything to make it a success.
For better or worse a lot of cities view themselves as major cities when they have multiple major league sport teams.
Houston also has history with hockey but I think Houston would be viewed more of an expansion because of higher fees for a new franchise. It would have a broader financial base than cities the size of Indianapolis. |

Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, St. Louis all have populations well below 500,000. I doubt the NHL wants to add another one like Salt Lake.
Portland I can see, perfect geographic location but do they have a major league arena?
Atlanta - hockey failed 2X already, big city but not the best sports town for a league that is gate driven.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome your 2023/2024 Kansas City Scouts.
 - Rota's Rooter
Yeh, nah -- Kansas City would be a bigger flop than Arizona ever was. The sole reason that they have a stadium is for college basketball (specifically the Final 4 whenever they can get it) - the hockey aspect was a gimmick to try to fool voters for the tax referendum that it had more than a single purpose.
Ok yeh I mean I guess they do have a stadium - so there is at least that -but unless they magically grew fans that would consistently go to games - then I can't see how it would work, which is why they don't appear to have ever been seriously considered for expansion franchises.
---
On second thought, since it's not my money ... at this point --- ok, why not??? If Columbus has a team - just why not ... if you got no other place, I suppose it is as good as any other at this point (not counting Hamilton or Quebec City). |

I get that point but I think they look at the metro area size.
As far as Portland the arena that the Winterhawks use has a capacity of around 13000 which could be a temp plan until something new or the Blazers' arena was refurbished for hockey if feasible. |

Vancouver trades garland the 11th overall pick to Chicago for entwhistle and 44th 2nd
Hawks trade the 55th 2nd 67th 3rd Pitt for the 14th overall pick. Then hawks package the 14th and 19th pick to Arizona for 6th overall pick. Thoughts? - Scott1977
Difficult to pull off. There are teams wanting to move up and this is the deep skill & quantity draft year to move up. A team that is more interested in stockpiling picks (plural) due to their lack of draft choices, is the suitor ….maybe…..as you know |

Arizona has been subsidized by the league for years so their payroll isn't an issue.
Quebec is not an option because it doesn't open up another market to bring in anything more than gate revenues. TV money where its at.
Relocation cities I could see are Salt Lake City or Atlanta. Houston and KC would be expansion cities is my off the cuff guess. - Elbows15
What about Milwaukee? They have a ahl team don't know the numbers as far as attendance and popularity but make for some good rivalries. |

Just trying to come up with a secanrio where the hawks get a extra 1st round pick. Pitt L.A. Vancouver imo are teams that either need picks or cap dumps or both. |

I would caution against this conclusion. The biggest mistake made was the Glendale fiasco. Without getting into the back and forth with the City of Glendale, the potential season ticket base lives too far away to make that trek 41 random nights a year. They were doomed the minute they chose Glendale. Making the trek out there on 8 random Sunday afternoons to watch football is hard enough. The Suns probably wouldn't be able to draw out in Glendale, either.
Despite this mistake, the Phoenix area still produced Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies during the Coyote years. That's not nothing. Most of the rest of the AZ born had NHL dads: https://www.quanthockey.c...arizona-career-stats.html
I believe that with the right venue, Phoenix can support an NHL team. The Tempe proposal was stupid. It asked for public money and tax breaks, and it also had a lot of stuff that had nothing to do with hockey or sports. And it also caused unnecessary conflict with Phoenix over the flight path to the airport.
The area has already thrown too much public money at pro sports, and they're seeing the lack of results for it. Given how much private money was going to be spent in Tempe, it's clear that they can fund a scaled down project. There are parcels near downtown, like the old Coliseum property where the Suns used to play, and they should seriously look at this one. |

My wish list is simple.
Connor Bedard with the the first pick:
No matter what happens in terms of traders, I want:
Samuel Honzek big winger, needs a little quicker first step otherwise, cooking.
Otto Stenberg and scoring / offensive generator with big time jump and finishing power.
- wiz1901
Wiz, the board can play out so many different ways before 19, but do you think KD would see enough fit in either Honzek or Stenberg?
Specifically, Honzek does not appear to have the level of skating KD professes to want. And with Stenberg, would KD take another undersized top 6 forward on top of Bedard/Nazar/Reichel ?

I wouldn't be totally surprised if both call it quits; Toews more than Kane.
To pick teams, though; Toews to the Avs, and Kane to Carolina. |

I have watched enough of Honzek to know he can.
and Stenberg is really good dynamic and will get bigger...
and you know what?
at this point, I am unsure of anything.
would I care if they took two other bigger more physical wings like Kasper Halttunen or Ethan Gauthier? I have not problem with that but Stenberg in international play was
19games 17goals 15assists 32points
so I think he is not unsized when scoring that much against the bets in thus age group internationally all summer and season.
And there might be better fits than Big Sam. but there is lots of jump to him.
Not slow at all.
Grampa Wiz is just following his board and picking higher than the second picks slot.
I don't think JD will be in tears if Brayden lager falls in his lap, and he is not giant.
and besides they have a poopload of picks to go big and strong with LATER.
You gotta get guys who are gonna impact, if not at Bedard line mates for your second line of impact attackers.
I have Matt wood oil my board at #8 and I don't think the issues regarding his feet will hold anyone back from picking him in the first; he is really fast in tight short areas populated by defenders, like he showed in the Under -18s a month back (go watch him and Otto...
I love that we don't know IF anyone is trading out in the first no matter what crap is printed.
We don't know IF anyone is why to crazily pull out of the first round and help the Hawks, even if we give 2nd rounders, take their flotsam fat Cap contracts or even add one of our five best players (you figure this five vets out...)
What I wonder is all the trade deadline deals made by playoff contenders that are NOW non contenders by way of elimination....they traded first rounders second rounders, etc.
How itchy are they to start re-stocking as their ticking clocks off and they now may be shopping good players....

Milwaukee has too much poor people in other words not an affluent enough population to support NHL. Support AHL - so so. I thought Québec City and Portland sounded more financially capable or interest is present than nearly each of the other choices sughedyed |

Are you serious? Have you ever actually been to Southeastern Wisconsin? Ever been to Lake Geneva? Or the area around there?
Milwaukee won't happen because it is too close to Wirtz's fiefdom, but it isn't because this ridiculous 'affluency' angle.

I can agree with this. Wheeler wants out of the Peg. They take the risk with Toews. He signs a 35+ contract with performance clauses. Big cap savings. Kane still likes playing with Panarin (and maybe the new coach is Quenneville). Kane signs in January for a few million (surely by then the Rangers will have some big salary to put on LTIR).

So I googled 'NHL draft pick value chart" and got several hits. The values vary widely from the various links. Here's one of the latest, updated in 2022. There are a few draft day trade examples from around 2019-2021 shown for reference. Just picks for picks and do not include players.
https://bluebulletreport....value-chart-2022-edition/
There are other charts out there if you want to look them up. |
