Ehh... he's a big boy at 6'3, 221, blocks shots, averages about a hit a game, kills penalties, and has been used heavily in 5v5 dZone starts.

I'm not suggesting he's a top pairing guy but he's a solid, steady d-man who would look pretty damn good in our Top 6.

Rielly-Schenn
Gavrikov-Brodie
McCabe-Liljegren

If the Leafs can do better than Gav, I'm all for it.

- mjones242

Thats fine if he wasnt going to be big time overpaid for what he is. Hes going to get over 5M a year....he simply isnt worth that. We have enough middling dmen. We need top end, or just ride it out for now IMO.

Go all in for a goalie Helly/Saros over Gavrikov. Cap space spent poorly IMO.

just did a quick check.
looks like his 5v5 he was even
with his net empty 4gf 21ga (-17) .... also empty net should not count in +/-

EK is too expensive. unless they wanted JT

During the 2022-23 NHL season, Karlsson was on the ice for a staggering 126 even-strength goals against, which is an exceptionally high number. In fact, Karlsson is the first player to break the 100 GA mark in the past 15 years.

Seems to be a lot of dirty plays at the World Championships. I guess some guys have been watching the NHL playoffs and are trying to increase their value.

you need to think of Holmberg as 3C or 4C also is in the mix
- dmnted

I hope so. I liked him when he first got up to the Leafs and he played very well back with the Marlies.

Solid bottom of the lineup guy and cheap.

Being on a team that is constantly losing games and needing to pull the goalie.

Never thought about how much that can skew a players plus minus and goals allowed.

Also a good shutdown D is not going to be out there with the goalie pulled, but a Karlsson would be every time.

Things change in a year. Karlsson had a fantastic year. I think any team trading for him is going to be disappointed. Regardless if you're paying him 7 million or 8.

there is worse..if you go by ice time

Jordan Kyrou on the ice for 94 against in 1188 min, if he played the same mins as Karlson (1792) that comes out to 142 against

also Seth jones 92 agaisnt, if he played 1792 mins = 118

the one plus I would say for adding Karlsson.. is they Leafs do need another D who can move the puck out.

I saw (read) an article, that outside of Reilly, the leafs generated no offence from the D.. just could not move the puck up the ice.

thats a huge problem. if you could swap out JT for Karlsson..then why the F not. (never happen i know)

we've seen EK drag a team to the confernce finals

Cap hit projection for Soucy is 2.6M.

You trade Brodie and bring in Soucy and Karlsson at 7M you are up.

Also if the players were blunt about something in the exit interviews I'd imagine that would be high up on the list. Would be pretty frustrating being top offensive players in the game but not being given the puck cleanly.

you can keep Brodie and bring in both of them also, its pretty much Rielly, Mccabe, Brodie and lily.

Gio is cooked...use him as a 7th. add 2 more like you mentioned

Listen, just because you had 3 #1 D's on your cup runs doesn't mean everyone gets to.

Not like anyone would have said Forsling and Gudas were "deep post season" d-man before this year

That's a part I'm just not sure about. I don't know if I'd want to roll the dice on it - but Karlsson is an elite talent who was fighting injury for several years - I think the last time he played a full season was 2015-16 - but he's also 33. Regardless of whether it's this year, or the year following - at some point you have an aging player who can't quite be the offensive star who also never never learned to play defense.

Karlsson isnt the answer I dont think. Id look for someone else in trade potentially. Josi?

You can.

I'd just like the picks you'd get from Brodie and aim higher.

Brodie is worth a decent amount for a 1 year contract, I'd like to see the leafs recalibrate on D a bit here.

Preds aren't in a rebuild though.

Also would he waive his NMC? Nashville should be competitive this season.

I agree entirely with this.

I love Samsomov and all, but if you can get one of those guys, that's excellent. And run Woll as the backup.

Karlsson is also a direct cause of goals against. He's abysmal defensively.

It's a hard no from me for the Leafs getting that mess.

So which of Bob, Aided Hill, or Freddie would you have traded for before the season?

Pretty sure they are in a rebuild now. They just traded Ekholm, and missed the playoffs. Why trade him if they are going to try and contend?

I'm not sure what they're doing - or if they know! They moved Ekholm with term (3 years left) and ate $250k / year (who cares, I know, but there's the principal of it) and received Edmonton's 1st, Reid Schaefer (the 2022 #32 pick), and a 4th - as well as Tyson Barrie, who does have one more year.

That's not a hockey trade. Ekholm is vastly superior to Barrie, so there's a rebuilding undertone to that move.

Unlike a lot of people in here, I've never hated Freddy and would've liked him still here.

Bob at least has a past of being a Vezina winner, but man, was he horrible all season.
