Matthews can’t sign pre-July 1. Teams aren’t going to know the cap going forward until the next GMs meeting (late June?) when they might get some idea about the next few years. Matthews said he wants to stay and the Leafs want to keep him so he’ll likely get done unless a new GM comes in and does some dumb deals.

A NMC means very little for a player of Matthews caliber. If he were being moved (which would be foolish) he could name his destination where he would agree to a deal and give the Leafs a far better return. The Leafs would lose any trade involving Matthews.

My point was to do more with his contribution as GM was not just to do with the roster.

It was Dubas, with the support of head coach Sheldon Keefe, who oversaw the expansion of a skill development program that allowed players to hone their abilities throughout the season.

Auston Matthews and John Tavares, in particular, have raved about the operation. Players like Conor Timmins spent morning after morning with skating coach Paul Matheson while skill development consultants like Denver Manderson joined the team for skill sessions on the road. The Leafs even brought their practice goalie, Andrew D’Agostini, on road trips, even the long ones, to spare their regular goaltenders some wear and tear.

That didn’t exist in the pre-Dubas era. There was no “process” in place, an organization-wide way of doing things that trickled down from the top into every corner of the organization. Information was more siloed in the Lamoriello days. After Dubas became GM that changed. Staff members from the research and development departments started attending practice regularly. The dress code was relaxed. Players and staff were free to sport facial hair and felt more comfortable being themselves. "

There is much more to being a GM than the names on jerseys, and it's probably not a coincidence that the people who have always been vocal about hating Dubas cannot seem to provide more insight than about a player on the team or the result of a season. They may as well be screaming "I actually have no idea what a GM actually does"

It is unknown what the contractual situation for these and others are with the Leafs. Some could of their contracts could expire on June 30, and some could have one or two years left on their deals. The point here is that Dubas after five years in control of the organization in Toronto was able to put in his people from top to bottom and that in the near future, more of them could be departing.

Yeah you said a bunch of leafy things about Chancellor Dubas the Saint which all is pretty minute in the grand scheme that his job is to build a winner. You can’t look at a loser and be like “but look how great he loses”.
