That was for the previous day. We won’t know about JBD until tomorrow.
Alec Regula is on waivers today too. Maybe KD pulls a SB and brings back a former Hawks legend. - DarthKane
That would have been a tough choice for SB. Either bring back someone, or take a chance on a former first rounder. |

All I want is all time great Wyatt Kalynuk back. Kid could skate. Then we’d have two guys named Wyatt on defense. Sounds pretty intimidating to me. Win win. |

His point doesn’t explain why KK wasn’t very good defensively against “lesser” competition. It does explain why KK got away with some poor decision making. In the Memorial cup Korchinski was burned a few times after ill timed offensive forays.
The best case is KK gets his 9 games for the Hawks then goes back to junior where he works on the defensive and cerebral sides of his game. Maybe have a roving coach works with him like Campbell was for Boqvist in London? The worst case is KK sits in Chicago using up his 9 games throughout the season. And should an underdeveloped KK play on the Hawk roster all season do you really think a 19 year old playing on a weak roster with “mentors” like Jones or Murphy is better for his growth than playing junior? - paulr
Hope for the best here but the history of offensive defensemen from Juniors fulfilling their potential is very low. Defensive mistakes end up in the back of the net in the NHL and coaches will not play River Boat Gamblers. Offensive defensemen are mostly a myth to begin with. Last season only 20 guys exceeded 50 points and only 36 guys exceeded 40 points. Maybe he is another Makar, Fox or Hughes but all of those guys were given a couple of seasons post-draft to further develop. I hope they send him back right away and tell him instead of 73 points and plus 50 the Hawks are fine with 50 points but want plus 73 or more.

The question is though, do you feel any better about Gajan over Hrabel after listening???
I found it interesting that the most talked about F was Misiak - vabeachbear
Yea, Gajun v Hrabal. I have the USHL/NAHL/BCHL package so I had seen Gajun in a few games in the USHL, a few in the NAHL and of course the WJC. So, I saw his athleticism and skating too, which is strong, that the 2 guys didn't mention. But these two are sharp and have obviously seen these kids multiple times so I got a lot out of it.
I like Gajun but he was drafted on his possibilities not as much past performance and of course it's his draft +1 yr cuz he wasn't drafted his first time eligible. Add he wasn't even top 3-4 in Slovakian goalies. Never played internationally until he was 19 last yr when there was an injury they called him over from Chippewa. He was not invited to the WJC camp IIRC.
Goes lights out in the WJC, good in the USHL and very good in the NAHL and was drafted on this yr and his athleticism....... My take on the kid? He'll play like Shesterkin in style. Kid is that athletic, skates that well and is the same size. I think that excited the organIzation. https://www.eliteprospect.../player/690368/adam-gajan
But, I'm on record as saying Hrabal is the best I've seen come thru the USHL in 15 yrs and that includes Knight/Oetenger and the NTDP. Kid skates near as well as Gajun, is a helluva an athlete himself but plays a fine technical style and the goalie is huge at 6ft 7in. Huge guy that skates as well as most goalies, plays technical and is 6ft 7in??? ..... Sign me up.
Loved hearing the praise for Misiak. You can see glimpses of O'Rielly at best and maybe a stretch he's a Bolland type without the jrs backclass. A center, good size, at least average skating, IQ guy and like Bolland a tenacious high motor do what it takes type....... Gonna make it a point to look at some Erie OHL games this yr.

I’m not a fan of dmen playing on their offside, especially rookie defensemen. Doesn’t mean it can’t be done, just not a fan. Just go with Zaitsev, it’s not like they’re competing for a playoff spot, then go with two or three rookies on the left side, gives the rooks a better chance to succeed. - Angotti
Dmen playing their offside is never ideal. A big reason right shot Dmen are so coveted.

Probably because most teams are trying to pare rosters down at the moment. Is he a great prospect, or simply a former 1st rounder? - Chunk
Well, I’m thinking not a great prospect or he wouldn’t be on waivers, however he averaged >17 minutes TOI in 19 games for the Sens last year, so I’m kind of surprised since he’s a former #1 pick and RD. In reading Darth’s post, I guess he can still be claimed, we’ll see. |

I don't claim to have the answer, but is it possible that "not being good defensively" has something to do with the "bad habits" picked up from said teenage competition, and cemented by being able to get away with said bad habits due to the quality of competition?
Most people are not Bedards. They will play down to or up to the level of competition (to the extent their talent allows) and call it a day. - busmaster
All good points in this thread for and against KK staying up with the club. Just wanna add KK will be eligible to play in the AHL playoffs this yr. He's a free bird after the last game of jrs this season and can immediately play AHL.
Shelter the kid, let him live an NHL life or some kinda 9 games NHL, spread them out and let em practice/film work/play as long as you can with big leaguers, scratch him a few times then a 5 game AHL rehab stint, play WJC, back to jrs to finish the season then up with the Hogs.
IMO the Hawks will decide on what's best for his long term development and I'll be on board either way. Small sample size but I like how they handled Reichel, Vlasic and Phillips too and as a result assume they'll pick the right path for AA.
All about development in this rebuild, any rebuild. All the kids. They have to make the right calls on their paths then develop them properly at that particular level. KK included.

Mr Richochet
I know you are a big fan of I Phillips
As we all know he is auditoning to hold down a spot on the revamped Chicago blueline.
Through the exhibition season so far it appears that Phillips is not quite ready for regular duty
But so too are each of the young prospects, even Kaiser. Kaiser however is the best right now of the kids and i expect that he willl spend most if not the entire season in rhe NHL.
So i say all this as a way to get to my question to you about Phillips.
There is an.opening for a young player to take on a regular shift on the blueline, yet do you think Phillips has much farther to go to reach his ceiling?
Because although a gifted athete, will he ever have the necessary drive/desire to be consistently applying his size and strength in defending. It would surely not go unnoticed by both Richardson and KD
As LA Hawk reminds us, Sorenson, Rockford head coach, is a fan. I don't know i go with what he says.
Care to project I Phillips future, Mr Richochet? |

Perhaps Regula has to clear waivers to be demoted? Or he just hadn't progressed enough as a pro (more likely).
Mitchell though is reunited with his collegee coach - is that correct- and might he handle the NHL strength size of oposing players better than when in Chicago?
I bet many of us had high hopes for both Mitchell and Boqvist |

There is an entire defense squad possible from all the ex Blackhawk dmen
Most though qualify only for the AHL crew.
Holl and Boqvist, maybe Mitchell headline NHL bunch.
Just out of curiosity did Lalonde ever amount toi a descent dman in European/Swedish etc al leagues? |

My concern with KK staying up, especially if he’s not ready, which I don’t think he is, is how many 19 year olds have had huge bumps in their career or completely fizzle out. Look no further than Kirby Dach, a kid, like KK who had gaps in his game that came onto a bad team and just couldn’t get better. Had Korchinski been a top two defenseman on Canada’s World Junior team playing against the best 18 and 19 years olds, I’d still have reservations about him making an NHL team. But only 9 months ago he was a third pairing defenseman playing protected minutes, where the coaches didn’t fully trust him in all situations. And a top two defenseman, who was a year older, DelMastro was a top pairing defenseman on that team, and he’s not ready for the show today. I’d prefer the Hawks err on the side of caution and put KK back to Seattle, where I think he belongs. - paulr
Dach didn't play with the confidence K2 has shown. And aside from being tall - wasn't ever really a dominating player with an overpowering toolset. He's okeyish all around. Pretty much the pass first, tall but not big, good skating fine as a complementary player kind of guy. Higher floor than an average pick but not really high ceiling like Zegras, Caulfield or Cozens. Same player he was in junior he is in the pros.
For K2 a more appropriate comparable would be Girard maybe? or somewhere between Girarad and Dahlin - both who came in as 19 year olds and had decent enough careers. Hamilton is probably a good comparison and he played his 19 year in the NHL.
Bobby Orr did play 46 games his 19 year so that was a thing. Looking at this list its not like its super detrimental and most of the really good skaters and high end offensive players are in the NHL sooner rather than later.

I do like Phillips. Noticed something this yr with him in the ONE NHL game and I might have found another flaw in my scouting/evaluating.
Kid always jumped out to me for his balanced 4 way skating, always. Then you notice his size. Kinda stiff when he gets the puck but as a 6ft 3in athletic rangy Dman the hope was a lesser version of K'Andre Miller.
last preseason his skating stood out, the one game this yr not so much in the ONE game. Why? Vlasic, KK, Allan, Kaiser were all there last yr and this yr too. Does his skating not jump out cuz Kaiser, Vlasic, Allan and KK are a yr older and have progressed and Phillips hasn't???
Probably not but I'm gonna eye ball him tonight.
Kid is now 22, 180 jr games over 3 yrs and cuz of Covid and MJ shutting down he was allowed to play AHL early so he has 3 yrs at RKF as a 5th rd draft pick. Kid has played a bunch of hockey and I really like that he put up 80 PIM at RKF last yr when he had never had a yr with as many PIM as games played...... He's playing more physical?
Honestly, I like him less now that I see Kaiser, Vlasic, KK and Allan more and more but I very much like Phillips and can see him playing 3rd pair physical NHL minutes in a couple yrs.
With Vlasic and Regula gone from RKF who plays all those PP, PK and top 4 minutes? Could this be the yr that Phillips gets all those prime/tough AHL minutes?
But yes, I like Philips a bunch. 2-3 yrs and I think he can take 3rd pairing NHL minutes but of course the Hawks will be rounding into win mode around that time. I'll say this, his value now is much higher than the 5th used on him. If they move him they get back some solid capitol in picks or prospects.
