A coaching change is probably the next step
I agree with uncle ion though , it’s hard to win without a top captain type guy. - Boss34
If you win, it's assumed you have a top captain type. It's not always true and there's no measurement.
Is Quinn Hughes a great captain? Was Bo Horvat bad? or is leadership not a big part of their turnaround?

Say hello Lukas Rousek! - kingcong39
Expect that along with Girgs/Robinson at a reduced salary or fresh blood.

Hughes is leading by example , he’s very offensively gifted
Okposo can’t actually lead by example, neither can zem. They just don’t have enough talent.
Horvat’s having a good season for the islanders, they switched coaches and are still looking from the outside |

That's my point. Coach was the big change there, not anything having to do with leadership.
Sabres looked better than them heading into the season. This was the season of no excuses.
We could easily be talking about Cozens leading by example right now and HC Peca. |

Peca could still be coach here next season. Does feel like a guy slipped away. A Buffalo guy …..
Cozens is the most disappointing part other then tage imo
Serious regression, and yes I realized it could happen . But not to this degree.

It's ridiculous how many offseason fears played out. Donnie not wanting an assistant who threatened his job security might be at the top.
Forcing him to leave may have burned that bridge.

Peca moving on was supposedly nothing to be concerned about, or so I read here when it was brought up.
Fast forward to an article written by Larry Brooks lauding Peca for the work he has done so far this season. |

Gerbe told us early in the off-season that they wanted to make assistant changes.
I don't think the front office is nearly as unified as we're led to believe.

It starts at the top for me, and I'm not talking about the coach.
When you are the GM, and you make moves that are akin to tucking your tail as a rodent and running away, under the guise of nobody good wants to be in Buffalo, and the players you do bring in are mostly bums, you have totally failed to properly support the young players you recently signed long term deals with.
One example is the revolving door of linemates Cozens was saddled with for a large chunk of the season.
They cannot continue to operate under the premise that young top players don't need quality veteran support.
It's one of the largest failures of the current management. |

I'm expecting Zemgus, Krebs, Robinson and Rousek as the 4 for the 4th line.
Makes sense to keep expectations low. |

There's a level of disconnect in the front office.
Not sure how different it is compared to other teams, but it is there.
You can see it by comparing some of their draft picks. |

I don't think they'll want to spend that much. Is that raising or lowering expectations?
Side effect of this miserable season is low attendance and I expect that to hit their budget.

Quality support in general
This team played much better once Quinn came back and added more talent/depth to the top 9.
Was Quinn a veteran ? No. But he’s a good hockey player.

If you want lean and efficient, I give you Krebs, Rosen and Savoie on the 4th line.
Problem solved! |

I still have no clue what their plan is for these kids. Have learned very little in the first half. Benson has been struggling, Krebs has done absolutely nothing, Rosen and Kulich haven't gotten a real shot, Savoie's been injured half the season. Thumbs up for Ostlund I guess.
How does this fit? Do you trust the guys making these decisions?

Pretty simple actually, teams they were chasing had games in hand and also played well during that stretch.
Not rocket science |

No PP time and poor shooting luck.
His -4.6 goals below expected are worst on the team (Cozens is -4.5 goals below expected).
His 0.91 expected goals per 60 is tied with Peterka. Difference being Peterka has scored 6 goals above expected.
Being snakebitten and not generating offence are two completely different things

Donnie really looked at the lineup card and decided to run Benson with Krebs and Robinson and put Okposo on the top line for a few games prior to the break.
And we wonder why we suck |
