If you want to do that with 2nd round picks fine, when it comes to 1st round picks especially the top 5, most pros come out of this group period. No trading it away, best available and you move on. Trust your scouting department trust your eyes and don't get tunnel vision, i should say "most effective pros"
- BetweenTheDots

While I generally agree with your premise you can’t be an absolutist either. There could be a situation where trading a top five pick would be something to consider.

If the Hawks draft 4-5, I hope they package that pick and a 1st next year to get Celebrini. Otherwise, if they don't want to make the pick, send it to someone for an established young player. Quantity for the sake of quantity is over. They've picked up three drafts worth of prospects in the last two years and have a poop ton more the next three years.

If I was the GM with the #1 pick I wouldn't make that trade. If you have a guaranteed shot at Celebrini you take it.

Indeed, so what would be the issue with trading the pick for a player who has already proven to be a producer in the league (22-24 years old), instead of a player you hope turns into one. No idea if a player like that is even available, but with the cap being the cap and rosters being capped, if a player meeting this description is available, I make that trade 100/100.

Still not finalized, still details to be worked out, but all indications are that the Montreal Canadiens are trading Sean Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets

- captainserious

Montreal gets a 1st round pick to take Monahan from Calgary, now they get another 1st round pick to trade him to the Peg. Take notes Kyle, this is how to manage your assets. #kdfail

True, but it would have to be a really generous offer for that pick to make it work and would have to further the rebuild plan. The KD and the Hawks didn't teardown the team and set in motion a full rebuild via the draft to trade away the high picks. So if they move it, it would be to further that rebuild along those plans or it would need to be some crazy offer they can't pass up.

Obviously any trade in this scenario would mean KD thinks that move would benefit the Hawks.

Not just benefit, but it has to be part of the vision to move the team forward long term.

Unless you are talking about a Barkov, Marner, Mackinnon, Draisaitl, guys like that who were drafted in the top 5 sure, but i really don't want my GM to settle because he's afraid of being wrong on a draft pick. For me i can't settle for a average pro player because the guy i draft might not be a NHL player.

You can make a trade that benefits the team, but moves the team in a different direction than the course they've been set on and working towards.

I'm just saying they didn't tear apart the team to look to trade those picks away unless it's a really compelling trade offer.

Do the Hawks have enough superstars in the pipeline yet that looks promising to justify trading for a player that much closer to UFA status and a payday? This is considering that the "win now" mode is still at least 2 years out, so that age 22 to 24 player will be 24-26 yrs old when the Hawks are actually competitive.

I see the Rangers may put Kakko on the market. Don't know if he checks the boxes KD wants in a player, or if the Hawks want to take on an under performing forward when they already have Reichel. rangers are looking for a center to replace Chytil, so the Hawks may not be a fit anyway. Reichel for Kakko? Change of scenery for both players. Thoughts?

Interesting. I'd read here that the LA model with an established coach like Doonesbury is the preferred model.

The ideal turn of events would be to draft Celebrini first and trade the Tampa first plus ? FOR a higher second first round. But would another team as well as KD do a 2025 #1 plus exchange the Tampa pick for as late as pick 5 or 6? I might do it on conditional basis: either Lindstrom or a dman is still on the board. I prefer the mean tougher guy than the big scoring dman but I could be wrong which dman to target. You give another team a 2nd round and a prospect and they might consider the trade The other team receives an injection of youth. Maybe they would accept Hayes but we have to pass on trade if Moore or Rinzell is required.

Absolutely not. They need more elite prospects. Unless, of course, the goal is to quickly get mediocre so short-term oriented fans will r-e-l-a-x.

Let's say the TB pick is 18-22. How far up could the Hawks move up in the 1st round if Reichel and the TB pick is packaged? I would say maybe 10 spots? Depends if any GM has a woody for Reichel and is willing to trade a pick in the 8-12 range. And KD has to love whoever is on the board at that spot to make the trade.

If the Hawks are out on The German, that's the type of trade I'd make - another bite at the elite prospect apple.

Obviously not the GM's or players' fault.
