probably more energy, but what does this have to do with playing hockey? - jd250
Sigh.
You answered the question with the first part of you statement. If it takes more energy, wouldn't there be more to it than just saying they play the same amount of games. Or running the same distance?
It takes a hell of a lot more effort for the Flyers to succeed even to their meager standards than it does for the Avalanche (as an example) to succeed. But if you disagree because they play the same amount of games, again, we will agree to disagree.

I know I posted that I thought some players had quit and maybe that was true, maybe it wasn't, but I don't think the team has quit. I just think they are back in last year's mode just waiting for the next shoe to drop. But I also do not believe the team is gassed. That is just a lame excuse. The Flyers players have played roughly the same number of games and roughly the same number of minutes as every other player on every other team. I am sure they are banged up after a long season, but not more so than any other player. The Flyers went into this season without a 1D and a 1C but at least they had a franchise goalie. Now they have none of these key positions filled. - jd250 We can agree to disagree. Yeah, other teams and players have played the same amount of games and such, but did they have to lay it all on the ice every night like the Flyers did? The Flyers league the league in blocked shots...that takes it's toll too. It's similar to a guy that lacks a smooth skating stride. He has to skate harder to keep up with the better skaters. The Flyers had to play harder to keep up with the better teams.

Figure it out. It's an analogy that the entity who is expending less energy to complete a task has more at the end in reserve. |

Oscar Eklind, LW, 25 (Lulea, SHL)
There’s plenty of interest in Eklind, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound winger. He had a breakout season with 17 goals and 28 points in 48 games with Lulea while being a real feisty, physical presence. He’s a good skater for his size, which could intrigue NHL teams as a potential bottom-six scoring threat. Eklind’s ability to be a finisher has been beneficial for Lulea, and he’s a good net-front presence who can be difficult to move out of the way. There should be no shortage of teams vying for his services.

Other 1c's were not returning from 2 years off, 2 surgeries, and Torts bag skating them at te beginning of the year. - TheFreak
Torts teams are in shape by the end of training camp. EVERY SINGLE TEAM does bag skates in training camp and throughout the season. Torts makes it clear to all his players what to expect come training camp and the players are expected to come to camp in shape. Again, not an unreasonable request of a professional athlete. The Flyers have had good starts under Torts primarily because they come into the start of the season in shape and ready to play. This is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing. |

But we all admit and agree that the Flyers don't have top end talent. Therefore they must expend more energy to win games compared to teams with top end players. Why is this a surprise to anyone? |

Ok, but the Flyers do not have top end talent, a true 1C or even a true 1D. So what do you expect? Now I will grant you an average PP would make a world of difference in some game this year and take the pressure off, but in the end the Flyers have to win by structure and effort, because they just don't have the high end talent. This is fact and should not come as a surprise to anyone. |

It's not a contradiction ... just because the Flyers have to expend more energy does not mean they are gassed. I have not seen signs that the Flyers are gassed. Banged up? Sure. Unlucky? Sure. But besides the Columbus game, the Flyers have been in all these games and in some cases dominated the game like in Buffalo. A gassed team cannot dominate games like that. |

If he makes it, he’ll be the designated Rempe fighter. One scouting report says he can’t drive play and lacks acceleration.

Lack of talent is often misconstrued as "quitting". There was always a limit to what this team was capable of. - mickel25
What we have watched here in the last 2 weeks is not a lack of talent.
They have hung with the big boys all year, and now suddenly after beating Toronto they can't muster even a point against Chicago, Montreal and Columbus? Are they more talented teams than Philly has? |

They have looked gassed to me in the other games leading up to that 3 day break and then they looked gassed again against Columbus on the second of back to backs.

Torts has been accountable and has answered the questions when asked about them. For example the OT. Torts has stated he starts players like Cates or Poehling because he feels those give him the best chance to gain possession but also defend. So if they get possession, Torts can swap them out for his offensive players, and if they don't get possession he feels they have the best chance to defend and gain possession. As I have posted many times, I don't agree with his approach, but I certainly understand it.
- jd250
There have been numerous occasions that Tortorella has not been accountable and has avoided the press. All well documented.
Not completely related but before the Columbus game, Tortorella made a statement that the PP is not something that needs to be discussed and was not the issue. After the Columbus game he said if they could've executed on the 4 minute PP, it might have changed the game.
And though the PP is a BIG issue with this club, I want to point out is was a very bad PP before Torts came here, even with players like Giroux on the team. The Flyers have had a bad PP for several years now and through multiple coaches and players. This is something Jones and Briere really have to work on IMO. There are teams like San Jose that are not loaded with talent and still have an effective PP, and I do believe the Flyers have enough talent to be at least average. - jd250
This year the Flyers PP is at 12.7%. The last 3 full seasons with Giroux here, the Flyers PP percentage was 17.1, 20.8 and 19.2%.

I have stated many times and will state it again, if the Flyers had made the playoffs this season with this team and everything this team has had to go through, I believe Torts deserved the Jak Adams. But obviously the way the team has faltered down the stretch here and the way Torts has behaved through this past few weeks with his post games, my opinion has changed. - jd250
It wasn't a reality this year and it was never at any point this year. Pure fantasy. Now your starting to hedge your bets. Slowly but surely.

Ok .. so that averages 19 minutes per game. Couts was the 1C on this team. When you compare these minutes to other 1Cs around the league you clearly see Couts was not over used at all, he was used comparable to other 1Cs in the league.
https://www.nhl.com/stats...ssists&page=0&pageSize=50 - jd250
Unbelievable. How many of those other 1C's missed almost 2 years of hockey and had multiple back surgeries. As well as battling some minor issues from just this season? It's absurd that this needs to be explained to you.
