Ha ha, I just heard that the league may be expanded to 36 teams in 5 years from now. This take was given on NHL Network (Sirius/XM). There inclusions were SLC, Phoenix (again), Houston, Atlanta (again) and another team not yet identified. I think Buttman and the powers to be may just be losing their collective minds. - Phillywhiteout
I had heard about the Arizona and Atlanta, but not that they are looking to add 4 more teams...that would seem too much at once. Even if spread over say 5 years, how do they add the players from teams and let teams keep some kind of structure to their teams? Each team would lose 4 players over the expansion....I think 2 at one time would be too much
Back in the olden days there was a constant parade of stars holding out (sometimes for entire seasons) to extract more money or force trades. Messier, Coffee, Dryden, Peca, Yashin, Stevens, Bure, #88, etc.
Then you had team leaders like Fedorov, Tkachuk and Sakic who signed offer sheets to force their own teams to ante up.
It actually seems like there's less labor strife these days w/ the salary cap. Occasionally get a Nylander or a Cutter, but mostly guys just show up and play. - Tomahawk
Didn't John Leclair do that too? Hold out with term still on his contract for a higher pay day?

Dude, the Flyers currently have three players ON THE ROSTER that they burned a year off their ELC for. The fact that this continues to baffle you is alarming. - TobyFlenderson
But should be 4, right? York, Attard, Cates and Brink?
Ryan Poehling burned his first year off in Montreal too.
Vegas entered the league in 2017 and paid a 500M expansion fee. In 2021, Seattle entered and payed 650M. What is the price now? I'll give you a little bit of time to think about it. - MJL
I know what the price is now, but that's not the point. This league will become watered down with that many teams. It might actually become more watered down than the dreadful NBA and I certainly don't want that!

Disagree.
There's more than enough talent for another couple of teams.

No, it absolutely is the point. That money goes directly into the owners pockets. The players get 24 or so new jobs for every team.
We can agree to disagree. I'd say 2 more teams would be okay, but I think 4 more teams in that short of a window is pushing the envelope. - Phillywhiteout
I don't think it would happen in the span of time that you think it will. Vegas came in the league in 2017 and Seattle in 2021

I'm just telling you what I heard. It was Steve Kouleas, Andrew Raycroft and Anthony Stewart talking about it. Of course, the new CBA is due in 2026, so nothing will happen before that.

Dunno, heard the same arguments prior to the 90/00's expansions and then more recently with Vegas and Seattle.
Yet NHL teams are actually deeper in skill and talent today then they were back in the early 90's, and all the top teams somehow still manage to have multiple elite superstars.

That will kill the league. There’s already too many teams as it is. They just want ad revenue in every market regardless what it does to the on ice product.
You make this a 36 team league and there will be no way for anyone to rebuild without tanking.
