Thought of that as well and this was the one big RFA deal KFC needed to do this Summer. Unfortunately for Reichel, had he played better this season, could've signed for similar or more. Will be interesting to see what Davidson can sign him for.

Anyone else catch Foligno on the CHGO podcast yesterday? Unless I misheard (entirely possible), he expects KD to bring in enough talent for the Hawks to compete for a playoff spot.

If so, do you think Foligno had that as a parameter for him signing for 2 more years?

You’re wrong as usual, Vlasic will prove to be a bust just like Korbustsky is and Bedard will be. Chicago Busthawks.

I expect they should be competing for a playoff spot. Just by eliminating four or five AHL players and adding in solid rookies and or true NHL players they should be able to move up a few spots into playoff contention area.

If Vlasic's play levels off at what he did this year, this contract is perfectly in line with his play and probably a slight benefit to the Hawks in the long run as the cap increases. If he improves at all (especially on the offensive side) it is a massive score. If he improves to be the 40 point 2-way stud you mention, his post-bridge deal contract will be double what this deal is, so you bought cost certainty at a point where you will have to pay Bedard, KK and Nazar at least assuming they pan out.

The had a chance to either make him show it or lock him up through his prime. This is bad asset management.

Wow. Un(frank)ingbelievable, but at least you're consistently hypercritical for no good reason.

Bouchard's deal ends at the end of next season. I bet the Oilers would love to have him at $4.6m for the next 6 years.

Vlasic in one year has established himself as a legit top 4 dman. How many top 4 dmen are making more than $4.6m???

You're the only person I've seen question this deal but like I said, it tracks.

- HawkintheD

Of course the Oilers would like Bouchard for that money. The two cannot be compared. He is proven. Soon they will lock him up for 8 years and get him through the prime of his career. He will be UFA in his 30s. Better asset management in my opinion.

I'd say a Podkolzin-type of deal for Reichel - 2 years @ $1 million AAV.

Maybe, but I think the most important and overriding factor for Foligno to sign was the Hawks were the only hockey franchise anywhere that would give him 4 mil and for 2 yrs made it a slam dunk for him.

That's what brought him here in the first place, money.

When Foligno hangs them up in a couple years, is he going up to the broadcast booth or behind the bench?

Right. Because there is no possibility the Hawks sign him to an extension in year 5 and he never even reaches free agency.

At the three minute mark, Foligno says it's time for improvement. Not promising playoffs next season but expects to be in the mix.

Whatever he wants to do, I think he could be successful in either role. If I had to guess, I would say he'll take some type of coaching or player development role. Maybe he takes a year off, but he won't stay away from the game too long. I think that sticking around after his retirement (in some capacity) was always the plan for Foligno.

And what if he wouldn't agree to 8 years? A lot can happen in six years. If he falls off or is often injured, they can then cut him loose and ideally one of their many draft picks can replace him.

This contract has been pretty universally applauded. Seems like you are just trying to find something wrong with it.

This is one of the very few contracts that IMO is a true home town discount. It seems obvious the Wilmette kid wants to play in his hometown, and was willing to take a little less AAV and trade it for the term, especially with the M-NTC kicking in the last 2 years of the deal.

For KD it is a good deal, because no matter what the board thinks of Jones, you have a Vlasic/Jones pairing as either your #1 or #2 (top 4 in any case) D pairing over the next 6 years, at cost certain. This is a better or as good a pairing as most of the playoff teams are skating. Look at the Leafs (actually don't look at them
). How many minutes a game would Vlasic/Jones be playing for them?

- LAHawk

They would be first pair on the Leafs and Rielly would move to the second pair, hence why the leafs aren’t going anywhere, they are weak on the backend.

That's about the gist of it. My guess is Steve was the guy when they were winning Cups, was upset because they didn't sweep every round and weren't winning the games 10-0.

Vlasic has proven this year he can play top 2-4 mins (wondering if that makes him a middle 2-3 dman 😉) and be a stay at home shut down dman. He's also shown he can skate and may have more offense in his game.

You can absolutely compare them. Maybe if the Oilers had locked up Bouchard if he was willing to a deal similar to Vlasic's, they wouldn't be staring at a Jones like deal on his contract in a year.

Doesn't seem like very good asset management now does it?

Great question. With either one, a 6 year deal would have been a mistake. With the generational guys like McDavid, Matthews, Crosby, Ovi and hopefully Bedard, the GM's future is so linked that the GM's are at the players mercy and typically write the next highest contract and hope the superstar is happy. Draisaitl probably wishes he waited to sign because he has left $20+ million on the table by dramatically outperforming his contract. Great call by the GM to lock him up at his number. I also believe that forwards, and in particular power forwards, with the exception of Iginla, Shanahan, Pavelski and a few, peak in their 20s and their point dramatically decrease in their 30s whereas the D are still incredibly effective later.

Yes Vlasic will be 27 with $10 million in the bank with complete control of where he wants to sign.

I don't get the term. If the rebuild works, he's going to be a UFA right when they are going to have Cap issues.
