In the meantime, both playoff games last night were fantastic.

In a recent Powers article, he wrote "I don’t think Scott Wheeler’s top three draft prospects in his latest rankings are far off the Blackhawks’ thinking."

Those three are Celebrini, Demidov, Levshunov. A lot of other writers are running with that thought.

But notice the ambiguity in Powers' statement. "I don't think", "not far off".

Who really knows what KD and staff are thinking? Could be someone else. 7 weeks or so until we find out.

- boilermaker100

Right, but Powers whole article is based on the choice between two players, and basically gives almost no chance to select anyone outside of those two. It's just strange that reporters seem so confident in the argument.

I went to bed after the first period of the Dallas Colorado game. I was very surprised when I got up this morning. Seems I missed a good one.

Can't be too mad at the result of the lottery, especially considering what happened last year. My one complaint is it seems like the Hawks shouldn't lose access to the lottery for the next five years since they didn't actually move up.

But, hopefully, we'll be much better going forward (especially looking 2 years down the road) and we won't be at the bottom of the standings anyway

Holding the position a team started with does not count as winning. Only moving up does. They will be eligible for the 1st overall next year (assuming they are bad enough in the regular season).

Yeah Greenjeans. That's correct. I was wondering about that too.

From the NHL:

"The 2023 NHL Draft Lottery marks the second year for the implementation of a limit on how many times a team can win a Lottery Draw. No single team can advance in the draft order by reason of winning a Lottery Draw more than two times in any five-year period. "

https://media.nhl.com/sit...2023DraftLotteryGuide.pdf

You can win more than twice in five years but you can't advance in the draft order more than two times in any five-year period.

Thought I read a clarification today that said that only applies if a team MOVES UP two times in a 5 year period. Might have been if moves up to top two or something like that, but bottom line is since Hawks did not move up they could still get next years #1 or 2 by either staying out or moving up.

But! Don’t make that trade until San Jose have chosen on the off chance they don’t select Celebrini.
- paulr

because there is a chance the kid doesn't want to play there?

or they find a fault?

I think there would have to be a Juraj Slafkovsky type player they see as better over the long run. You think one of thise defenders or Lindtrom qualify?

I love you Raleigh!

I WAS incorrect at my assumption and that NHL site says as you said that staying at #2 doesn't affect the hawks as a SECOND win. even though their lotto combo came up for slot two.

My premsie was totally incorrect and now less depressed knowing the future drafts may come with a FUTURE LOTTERY win.

Whew.

You made my day.

I actually feel the shame of going to the penalty box now...and am happy the balckhawks have to pick the best player to make this club dominant.
(just not sure it isn't a prsopect a little farther from left field (Waveland ave.?)

I only saw the first two periods of the NYR/CAR game. It looked like CAR had the most jump and control of that game.

I have no idea why San Jose wouldn’t select him. I’m saying it strictly as a precaution in the unlikely event they pass on him. If there’s a trade in play for the Blackhawk’s pick at number 2, I’m just saying make it on the floor after San Jose has picked.

NOPE the hawks lottery balls are what kept them at #2
- wiz1901

It's not 100% clear on the official wording the league provided. They speak specifically about not being able to improve your draft order more than twice in 5 years. By winning second on the lotto they didn't improve their draft position, they just failed to lose it.

If you're the worst team in the league for 5 consecutive years you can draft 1st overall for 5 consecutive years. The rule pertains to moving up in the draft, not maintaining your current position (whatever it might be).

KD should be able to acquire the #1 overall pick from San Jose for #20, #151 and Bedard.
- DarthKane

Fixed, I'm not giving up on Raddysh.

Let's be honest too, we are probably moving up a few spots in the standings, so the odds of winning again are gonna be small. Probably gonna be somewhere like 5-7% chance anyway.

Funny tweet from Wyshynski

The @SanJoseSharks actually won the 1st three draft lottery draws. The @NHLBlackhawks won the 4th drawing for the second overall pick.

First time in NHL Draft Lottery history they had one redraw, let alone two.

Agree Boiler, Levshunov seems like a very safe pick(if there is such a thing), and they cannot miss with their first pick. They can be more aggressive and reach with Tampa’s pick, but not with the #2 pick. Keep building the defense, then use free agency, trades, Tampa pick, and 2nd round picks for offense. Beef touched on some of this on the last blog. They already have Bedard, Nazar, Kurashev. Reichel, and Moore as youngsters up front, that’s a really good start.
- Angotti

We really only know about Bedard upfront. Kurashev is not top 6 on a winner at this point.

Maybe I'm a bit naive but, and it is a big but, if Hall plays 60 games this season. Perry doesn't get launched, and the Hawks aren't killed by injuries,I'd figure they'd have an extra 10-15 points in the standings this year.

I figure a 20pt improvement next year is the least we should expect, unless they are decimated by injuries again

Shesterkin was good, but a high majority of Canes shots were not high danger. This series is looking very similar to last year when Florida swept the Canes but all were 1 goal games. Canes control a a lot of the play, but are still a perimeter team. Special teams deciding it, as well as goalie.

Yeah Bread. This is why I wanted that #1 card to be the Hawks so badly. I imagine a Hall, Bedard in year two, Nazar and whomever we sign will pot more goals this year. Maybe even Raddyish too if he's still here. Having a less decimated roster will help too.

We scored 0 or 1 goals in over 30 games last year. There's much room for improvement there.

what was the reason for the 2 re-draws?

Edit: I found the answer, San Jose won the draft 3 times in a row. That doesn't even happen on Tankathon!

Once Hawks know who they are picking will also determine if any D prospects are sent in a trade.

Yup! Pretty funny, looks like it was destined to be San Jose at #1 this year.
At least the Blackhawks didn't lose a spot or two.

Russia is not giving out passports and it could only get worse from here. They need a power forward who can score.
