I blame Donny for this past year. He made so many mistakes it’s ridiculous. - Sabretooth9

underwhelming 1st round pick
very accurate comparison - homiedclown
You're classifying him as underwhelming after an 18 year old's first season in the NHL?

What 18 year old are you expecting to be a needle mover in the modern NHL? |

11. Buffalo Sabres: Berkly Catton, C, Spokane-WHL
I feel a little off projecting another small forward being picked by the Sabres this high, but they’ve shown no hesitancy to draft smaller players, especially when they are super talented. Catton has every tool except size. I could see Helenius or Iginla as an option here as well.
I hear the groans
From THW
He’s been excellent as a center despite his size so far, winning a ton of faceoffs and checking really consistently as a top-line pivot for the past two seasons. Catton works hard defensively and wins a ton of puck battles through timing and consistency rather than pure size or strength so I think he’s got a real chance to be a center in the NHL when all is said and done.
Catton has been a major offensive leader for the Spokane Chiefs for the past two seasons, and is even one of the top players in the WHL so far this season. Be prepared to hear a lot of Zach Benson comparisons in the lead up to the drafts they’re both undersized WHL forwards with a ton of offense in their draft years. I like Benson’s compete level and hockey sense quite a bit more than Catton’s and I’d offer Logan Cooley as a more comparable prospect, at least as a draft year prospect. - TheSabresTaco
I think it's an inherent problem with hockey drafting. Catton might be the best/most skilled Junior player available at #11, but he wont turn out to be the best pro center. He may not even be a useful NHL player. It would be the next center taken in the draft but it could be the 6th, or 13th next center taken who is the one who sticks and makes a career out of it. But Buffalo perpetually drafts 7-11 and ends up with these tiny, highly skilled guys who are just really good Jr players.

Quinn, Cozens, Benson, Rosen, Savoie
2 of them under 6 feet... 2 already proven they can be good NHL'ers (would count Benson but i'll hold off). |

He spent his rookie season in the AHL with minimal production. |

He was 20-21 years old the season he scored 30 pts. He was also a -16.. The worst of his career so far.
He never even sniffed 30 again.

Benson, Rosen and Savoie are all under 6ft. Cozen's was drafted 5 years ago. I don't think any team is shaking in their boots playing any of these guys. |

Yes, and Benson spent his entire 18 year old rookie season putting up more points than Girgensons did during his rookie season in the AHL.
Benson also outproduced Girgensons 2nd pro season, which was his first in the NHL. |

Benson is 19 now, might want to double check the opponents boots.
