Overpay from us. Cates just had a dud season and with 1 year left on his deal, Konecny should garner a smaller return. I'd counter that by giving Philly the choice of removing Kulich or 11OA. Cates is worth about a 2nd, maybe a bit less. 11OA + Krebs is fair value for a pending UFA in TK. If an extension was in place, then your deal is fine.

I think you need to entice Philly to move him. He has RFA control and I think it's easy to assume that any acquiring team of a pending RFA is going to give that player multiple years. Plenty of history showing that trend.

So Cates for a 2nd, ok. Better players received less. But if that 2nd is 2026, I think you're ok, plus Krebs.

Then you have what may be a bidding war for Konecny.

11OA is probably a steep price to pay for a 1 year rental without that assurance that he'll sign, or a sign and trade. Adding Kulich on top of that is probably overkill. I think you could get away with sending a lesser prospect.

But to guarantee that sign and trade, pay the price and move on.

Outside of Stamkos, which I do not believe he will leave Tampa, Joshua would be my primary target in FA. I don't believe as a general rule that FA for over-priced veterans is a wise move. Rather, it is a good place to acquire B6 talent, which he clearly is.

They were like the 2017 Bills. Like we're here to play hard and not tank but we need a new top end of the roster and we'll sell pieces to make it happen.
