In fairness, Briere has set the team up to gain significant cap space next summer- Johannsen, Petersen, TK (I'm aware of the perception of imminent extension), Atkinson, and Hathaway off the cap. Now, between now and then could he change that trajectory, hope not.

Cap Friendly lists the roster at 19 of 23 - so before LTIR they have 500K to round out the roster. My understanding is they can not use LTIR until the season begins - they have to be cap-compliant before using LTIR - so it is actually worse than it looks

They can not be over 87.7M on opening night. They can not use LTIR until after they submit their cap-compliant roster to the league. Ellis and Johansen will be on the opening night roster - that 10.25M is on the books and will be used when determining if the team is cap-compliant. After opening night they can place players on LTIR. The team can go over in the offseason but must be cap-compliant on opening night - as their roster is constructed today; they are (frank)ed
