Lebrun's got his early UFA piece out on the Athletic. Nothing big to report other than he predicts everyone will get a minimum of 5/6 yrs and 5/6 milly per year. And that includes Bert and Domi and every big fugly d'man you can name. Going to be tight on July 1! |

I'm fine with keeping Domi. He has nice synergy with Matthews. He also has a more varied skillset than his daddy did.
Bert grew on me. I wouldn't pay a premium for him. By all rights he is a bottom six wrecking ball and somebody to park in front of the goalie on the PP2. But he wants to get paid top-six money and probably wants too much term.
I'd give Domi more money and term than Bert, but I'd be OK with keeping both if possible.
Defense-wise, I don't know. The market is thin and expensive. Zadorov is wanting McDonagh money. |

Daily FaceOff listed the top 75 pulled from AFPA’s projections. They had Domi getting 2@$3.5M. DeBrusk was just higher AAV (5.8 vs 5.2) than Bertuzzi but at an extra year.

Ya, I think Lebrun is crazy with some of his guestimates but then again the GM's all turn crazy July 1.
I wouldn't give Domi anything over $4M'ish and I'd probably only sign him IF there was something cooking with MM. Assuming the core is back together then I think the need upfront is really the 2C and Domi ain't it for me - at least not for more than a year. |

Of course JT can be asked to waive. I'm saying he won't. He has no reason to leave before his current contract expires, regardless of what Leaf management might say. - Nasty_Duck
Then you're delusional.
It's not that "he will say no". It's that Leafs management doesn't have the brains or the balls to do it.
He has every reason to leave if the Leafs make it clear they don't want him anymore because players almost always waive when told they're unwanted. It's only a matter of finding a suitable landing spot afterwards.
Since Nylander just signed an extension with an NMC, he is going nowhere.
Leafs will have to tough it out for one more season and then evaluate how much they can pay Marner while also having Matthews and Nylander, cuz that pair is not going anywhere.
They can pay Marner and they'll be fine. What they can't do is try to trade him because if he says no, which he would because unlike Tavares he still has tremendous open market value, he simply walks as a UFA and the Leafs are screwed for having lost him for nothing.

Kadri wasnt a playoff warriror. He was guaranteed to be suspended each playoffs, sure. But he wasnt some playoff "warrior".
Lets not be foolish. - Fakepartofme
Oh yeah, not good in the playoffs except when he's winning a Cup.
Sure.

The point you're missing is that they need to make some changes and they waited too late to do so.
Now hindsight is 20/20 obviously and they likely felt they'd take a further step this year after making the 2nd round last year, but the reality is change is required and the only option that makes sense right now is Marner.
Still, I doubt they find a deal they like -- or get Marner to agree to waive his NMC --so I'm 95% sure they're going to let Marner get to FA and maybe try to move him around the draft for picks, which means we'll probably running it back again next year.
It's going to be enormously difficult to make some wholesale changes with this team involving the Core 4.
Thankfully they have cap space and a new coach, so Tree has a chance to build a better backend through free agency, but I seriously doubt the Core 4 is broken up this year. - gravyface
And the change is getting rid of Tavares.
Moving Marner makes zero sense.

With Berube here I do wonder about Parayko and/or Binnington.
salary retention and there could be something there. - Santo_44
Binnington can really suck. Not sure I like him at all. |

The greatest lesson I learned from the bible: you and your 41 kid friends should not make fun of a bald guy.
2 Kings 2:23-24
King James Version
23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. - Atomic Wedgie

You need to get off this drone about how great Marner's defence is. He's not a perennial Selke candidate, he was nominated once. Last year his defence which had already declined the year before, fell off a relative cliff. GAx60 fell from his average 2.1-2.3, to 2.55 last year.
I agree he's great at being in position most of the time, but when an opposing large forward decides to run the net, Marner is pretty useless.
Mathews on the other hand, has only gotten better. - oldstyle
Only one of the star players who kills penalties, usually among the leaders in takeaways and nominated for the Selke multiple times in his young career.
5 times out of 7 seasons, probably makes it 6 out of 8 this year.

Enough man.
Kadri HAD to go. PERIOD! he was costing the Leafs in the Playoffs. He did the same in Colorado until the one year they won the cup - dmnted
He HAD to go? That's hilarious. I'd rather take a suspended Kadri than an invisible Kerfoot. Every day of the week.
Kadri had 16 playoff goals and 34 playoff points in 33 playoff games for Colorado.
The suspension was worth a Cup. He took it, Colorado took it, the Leafs were too stupid to keep it.
take out that one blow out game were he got all his points and BOOM!!! he doesn't - dmnted
Yes, a players best games don't count. Excellent logic. At least you're consistent with the Kadri logic of "he sucked except that time he scored a bunch and a won a Cup".
you are WRONG!
you can asked but the will never leave ....
Matthews left $$$ on the table - dmnted
So the Leafs go to Tavares and say, we don't want you this year and won't keep you when your contract expires, but he still says he wants to stay? Makes no sense.
Matthews took short deals at higher cap hits so he could maximize his money every time his contract runs out. He's not leaving a penny on the table, never has, never will. |

Kadri is no good to you if he's eating popcorn in the press box.
It would be nice to see Marner points spread more than bunched up with a string of not so much pressure to score games
