Sounds good. You’re making me hungry. I don’t think I’ve ever had Indian food that I didn’t like. Maybe I just don’t know what really good Indian tastes like?
- Dkos

I spent 2 high school years in India. NVM how and why.

The food you get here is bad. It is mostly north Indian style food. They put cream in everything. The samosa crusts should not be so thick.

It's getting better as we become more discerning. Avoid suburban places. Go to any place in university city here and see if there are lots of Indian students there, If there aren't, leave.

I love cooking btw.

For a Reading area guy, you sure have ethnic tastes.

Speaking of Reading, that Greek jamboree they have, it is not that good. The spanakopita is dry, the gelatoporeko is not as custardy as it should be.

The best non-high end food in northern cities now is South American or Asian. Zillions of options in Philly - food the best its ever been.

About the biryani. Get yourself an instant pot. Indian food bought locally here in the USA (outside of Queens and Edison) sucks. I ams sure your Tamil ex and her family will concur.

In India, they seal the pot shut with a flour paste around the rims in the local versions. Instant pot takes the hassle out of it.

I make biryani all the time. The important thing is to marinate the chicken and get extra long grain rice.

Here is the basic recipe for a 6 quater IP. Never mind all the cashews and raisins and all that crap you find online. Never mind the fried onion garnish.

1. Marinate 2 lbs chicken (doesn't really matter which cut but preferably boneless, cut into 1 inch chunks) in yogurt (full fat), salt, turmeric, pinch kashmiri red chilli (make sure it is kashmiri; Gochugaru will do as well, not the the red chili you find in Indian stores), 1/2 tsp of garam masala, 2 tsp ginger and garlic paste, and keep it overnight.

2. Grind 1/4 stick of cinnamon, 2 cloves, 4 cardamom pods in a coffee grinder.

3. Get some good quaklity saffron. Take a teaspeon and let sit in 1/4 cup of lukewarm water while the rest of the dish is being made.

4. Wash 2-3 cups extra long grain rice. Soak it in water while you do the next few steps.

5. Turn IP to saute. Put on some fat that has a high smoke point: Ghee/Avocado, sunflower oil.

6. Fry RED onions for a few mins till softened.

4. Add a teaspoon oil on one side of pot. Add the spices on it and let them fry/bloom for NO MORE than 20 seconds. Mix with onion.

7. Add marinated chicken, avoiding the drip liquids from the marinade. If needed, saute in batches, about 2 mins each side.

8. Switch off saute, Spread rice evenly on top of chicken. DO NOT STIR.

7. Put IP in high pressure for 7 mins. Quick release.

9. Take off lid. Mix rice and meat pieces, while stirring in saffrom milk.

10. Thank me here in a post-orgasmic glow.

EDIT: I see I messed up the numbers. NVM. But what is important is that the red onions should be sliced thn. NOT CHOPPED!!

Tips are always appreciated! Thanks.

Oh, you remember that chick, eh? She’s in Norristown of all places now, and we met in Maryland. Met up recently. Still a stunner. Making fine money. Good for her. Typically not into Indian women, but they occasionally offer up a real show stopper.

I’m not from Reading, but I did work there for a spell and had an apartment just outside that dump. Wouldn’t admit if I was from there, though, so take that for what it’s worth. My pop did move out that way, and I have many friends in West Reading/Wyomissing. You’re on point with the Greek Fest. At least the Fightins and Royals were fun, and I knew my way around the cheap after-hours spots.

My mom is in an unincorporated area between Harleysville and Spring Mount. It’s little more than a holler, but the area is beautiful with the trees, hills, and creeks.

My stomping grounds were more Phoenixville, but I spent a lot of my free time in between the city and Conshy.

Cream is bad? Ha ha. I’m in the burbs and (ignorantly) happy with the biryani I get near by (New Era Indian Cuisine). I like the lamb. I guess It’s technically in Philly (Chestnut Hill), but just down the street from me. I made a giant batch of chicken curry last night. Totally inauthentic, I’m sure, but pretty delicious to me. No cream…just coconut milk.

You’re not wrong. Look for places where Indians actually eat. If they bother, it’s probably worth it, because most of their matriarchs can seriously cook.

There are both northern and southern options here, so whether I want an uttapam or a northern curry, I’ve got locations for both covered.

I am curious all the same. I’m assuming you’re not George Harrison reincarnate.

Women, food. Taste it all, man. Explore the globe.

Started at a private high school where I got a scholarship. About a quarter of the kids were from South Korea. I mean they made the trip and boarded, they didn’t just live in the area. The Koreans had their own thing goin on, and everyone kept to their group with little crossover.

What I saw was an untapped market, so to speak. White guys were too scared to talk to them, and I figured some gotta like us.

And I was right.

Then New Orleans continued to allow me to keep learning more culturally while attending Tulane. Not sure if you’re aware of this, but they happen to have good food and fun girls there. Big secret. Keep it under your hat.

If you are expecting MM to be MAC or OVIE you are going to be greatly disappointed. Those guys are big physical skilled players..MM is more a finesse style player who should be a very very good player but not of the elite dominant level.
- hfc355

Let’s re-engage a prior debate. We already know about TK > Pasta… is MM > TK? Pasta? Johnny Hockey (when he was good)?

Yup. Training to be a doc last you brought her up. Family didn't want her to marry you because you had a kid and was what a decade or so older. I remember her and the ex who enigmatically described herself as Fujian (not Chinese).

Interesting on the personal geography. I grew up in such suburban/rural places, am never going back. To me, America is a staggeringly boring place outside the big cities.

As far as the other query:Dad was a little unusual. Think 60s, SDS, Northern Cali vibes. He taught high school there, and in Indonesia and Malaysia.

I was twice the size of anyone in Asia. And I was always large here. I would walk down streets and there would be literally a crowd of half naked urchins following me, gawking.

Anyway, some more half-assed multiethnic culinary random tips:

1. Trader Joes is offering a very good Dijon. Like the kind you get in France, far better than the fancy ones. Very pungent. Great for a dip for shellfish/corned beef samwich etc.

2. Amma's in Center City and West Philly has a very good sweet paan.

3. Some of the Chinese stores in Chinatown have started carrying better versions of those Taiwanese cured olives. I have a Taiwanese friend (not related to any HB poster here) who brings them for me any time they go.

4. The Georgian cuisine is rocking here now. Very good Khachapuri in Reading T. Get the one in black bread (forget name of place and dish; you will find it). There is a six feet + Greek young woman there who is a supermodel category stunner.

No such thing as Chicken curry, really in India. Btw If you add coconut milk, you are eaither going Kerala (south), or Goa (western enclave, full of IDF soldiers letting of steam), or somewhere close to Malay influence (Bengal -in the east).

None of them produce the kinda food you get in Indian restaurants here, which is almost exclusively Delhi style.

The best food in Philadelphia is Hardena's. Indonesian. Unreal food.

Tort’s isn’t that dumb that he will ruin MM. nothing hockey related, but just what he will have to go through to get here. He will let him play.

Bowman wasn’t even with Detroit during those “flashy” early years- he was winning cups with Pittsburgh - so bowman didn’t “let” Yzerman do anything of the sort. Yzerman was playing for 10 years before bowman even got there. He saw the player he was when he got there and pushed him to add to his game. Results speak for themselves.

- anti-lame

First, no one should ever mention the Great Scotty Bowman in the same paragraph as Tortorella. There is no equivalency between how SB handled players like Yzerman and how Torts does anything.

Second, let’s be real. GMDB and Hilferty will most likely tell Torts “Michkov is the face of the franchise, don’t f$&k with him”.

Without the security of knowing he could be resigned, or resigning him, you're not going to get that. Best bet would be to extend him irregardless. Then you can trade him later if you give him a modified NMC that doesn't kick in til next year or you cound give him a full NMC if he gave a discount on his services and keep him. He's our best player, and he wants to stay. That's something lots of teams wish they had.
- flylerid

He wouldn't be the best player on most teams in the league. Even being a first liner would be questionable. He's our best player because we lack talent, not because of TK having elite skill.

no one is comparing bowman to torts, don't be obtuse. the point is wanting a guy to add defensive tools to his arsenal is not an inherently bad thing, as some have suggested.

i agree with your second paragraph. no one is going to let this happen, not even torts himself. he's stubborn but he's not an idiot.

I didn't say that. Of course Farabee has talent, he is an NHL player. I just said he has OK skill. Nothing exceptional. Not sure you can really argue with this, can you?

He's better than "OK".

You see trades like that ahead of the draft in the NFL sometimes.

Hawks probably figure it’s cheaper to move up now than on draft day. They must think there is some kind of drop off after 18.

Except that he didn't say talentless, did he though, based on the quote you provide above? He said Flyers needed quality talent and skill. And that Farabee was "just ok", meaning presumably he didn't have that quality talent.

You may disagree, which is fine, but I personally don't see the contradiction .. .
