Watching Wyatt Johnston is painful. Sabres had to go way off the board and take someone nobody heard of when everyone thought the pick was going to be Johnston.

The Stars are also sometimes able to find out-of-the-box ways to give their prospects an edge

Wyatt Johnston is an incredible success story for their scouting/development system. Would he be THIS good THIS early without living with Joe Pavelski the past two seasons? Probably not

I cannot emphasize enough the risk of putting young guys in the NHL when they aren't ready, aren't getting enough minutes, or the situation isn't ideal. Even if they stick around the NHL they might not reach their true ceiling

Let them reach a jog before you ask them to sprint!

Welp,
Less than a month away from the Draft on Friday 6/28 and Sat 6/29.
That means Kevy has 4 weeks to negotiate a couple of trades to make the team somewhat appealing to FA's.

Stop complaining about things that weren't ever an option. If we'd have picked WJ, everyone would have freaked out and rightfully so. The draft is a gamble and sometimes teams hit late like that. This is like getting mad at Pasta getting drafted at 25 because he turned into a better version of what he projected to be.

Everyone in the league missed them, this is not a Sabres thing.

For a front office believed to be great at drafting.....they sure haven't hit on the majority of their high end picks and have been absolutely abysmal outside the 1st round.

Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too early to say that. Peterka and Quinn were good picks. Power, it remains to be seen. Benson fell into their lap, but they took the right guy. Savoie, Kulich, Rosen and Ostlund are all wait and see, with several of them showing considerably better than those drafted around them.

This revisionist history where we've just crapped the bed drafting since KA got here is just that. Revisionist. In actuality, no redraft is ever clean and if you only slide back a pick or two, it was a good pick.

In some final mocks, Wyatt Johnston was a 2nd round pick, while Rosen was considered a late high riser.

Even if the Sabres picked Wyatt, the chances of him being the same NHL players are slim due to the vastly greater roster support he has on the Stars.

I still can't believe the Sabres are such a trash organization they couldn't draft Pavel Datsyuk back in 1998. They had 6 (frank)ing opportunities...6!!! I mean goddamn, the guy is a HOFer. It doesn't matter nobody else knew, the Sabres alone are culpable for his slide. Shame on them.

Am I doing this right?

100%, Wyatt isn't Wyatt here, at least yet. Thinking that the Sabres were going to go off the board by 15-20 picks is just infuriating to me. It's tough enough watching this losing streak, we don't have to make it worse by making poop up. He was never going to be the pick as you say.

They are still waiting for Girgs to break out into the player they drafted....It's not too early to call, the 5 year plan is in year 5 and majority of the draft picks aren't close or are the wrong fit for open roles on the NHL roster.

Enough waiting, this bald knob gobbler is a joke and the front office just polishes his bald dome so much, it blinded Comrie, that's why he was so bad this past season...he's blind!

so far

our best 3rd round pick since 2010 is Jonas Johansson
our best 4th round pick since 2010 is Jacob Bryson
our best 5th round pick since 2010 is Cal Petersen

tampa gets guys like Cirelli, Point, Gudas

dallas gets guys like Lindell, Paull and Klingberg

rangers gets guys like Shesterkin, Fast, Graves, Buchnevich

this is why we fail

more security guards than scouts

Girgs will win the Selke this next year, it's almost assured. Didn't know that about Comms though, I'll be less hard on him this year after he resigns. I wonder how our 4th line of Krebs, Murray and Jost will do.

Novikov and Komarov may set new bounds there. But Portillo, Borgen and Hagel were all since 2010, so don't really agree with the assessments there. After the 2nd round it's like roulette and I'm not going to get too worked up over 5th rounders tbh. Our issue historically has been doing that while also drafting poorly in the first 2 rounds (which is where most teams make their gains).

Close, very close
You need to call out that 7th rounders are expected to be on the same schedule and be expected to produce the same as the #1-OA.
If you nail that down, then bang on

hagel was after 4th round

we got nothing for him

we got nothing for borgen

this is epic failure when you have nothing to show for all these draft picks over 13 years and with this rate of failure it's probably better to trade them all for actual assets

I thought the favorites were Wallstedt or Lysell, I remember was eating dinner and was waiting, and got the Connor McGregor “who da fuk is dat guy” reaction when Rosen was picked..
