I doubt it as well.
They roll it back with the new coach
But we'll see.

I think he's as good as gone.

Why picks and prospects? They don't really help the current window unless you move them out too or the prospects are ready to make the jump/impact. Which is a bit of a gamble with prospects.

I'm all for thinking ahead but at the same time, we have Matthews NOW. If we want to re-tool and restart, might as well move him too.

- Aaron_85

You could retool with matthews.

Marner having a massive regular season, doing nothing in the playoffs and walking away with zero return does absolutely nothing for the team.
- joel878

He was great last year in the first round.
He had a bad playoffs this year for sure
But guess Matthews has 2 playoffs goals in the past 10 playoff games.
He hasn't been great either

As ive said for years, move whoever to make the team in the playoffs better, marner, Matthews, willie ...i dont give a (frank) who it is. Trade them all for all i care. 8 years and Matthews as yet to dominate more than one round. So trade anyone

But they have to be great deals.

I'm not sure they move him. I agree with not giving him away. I understand that Marner, his agent and his dad are still upset at him losing out on rookie bonus money. He's been paid back with interest. If this next set of negotiations is the same as the previous one, I'm for moving him out.

If Leafs lose Marner for nothing end of next season, the aren't worth the fans they have.

The only reason they do that is because the have NO FUKING BALLS to do business. It's unpleasant at times, hurts feelings and sucks but it's professional sports.

In no world should he walk for nothing. We already got years of playoff nothing out of him. Time for him and his dad to give a bit back.

If Marner will not sign an extension this summer, and a more team friendly one, then you move his ass or press box him and brand him a cancer. Fuk him, his dad and his hockey career.

This team needs to quit fuking around and coddling a bunch of baby millionaires.

None of this matters. Our salary structure and roster construction is broken. Something has to change because it doesn't work this way. it's also proven over and over again that Mitch's game diminishes in the playoffs. Time to move on.

It will change when JT comes off the books. I agree with not giving away Marner. My problem with him is that his agent and dad have showed that they will push the asking price beyond what is reasonable. Leafs should not fall for it again IMO.

Even with JT coming off the books next year, the salaries of Matthews, Marner, and Willie are too much of the cap on three similar players. They are too similar in style of play and personality. It does not work and would continue not working.

Why is this so hard for some to understand?!?

1. Too many similar players. Wimpy and expensive to be clear.
2. Leafs are not Cup contenders, do NOT continue to let players walk for nothing as though you are. Getting your own Cap hit back is not a fuking prize.

Are the Leafs the Marner of hockey clubs? Get some balls and do what needs to be done. Trade greedy/wimpy players before they walk or are too expensive FFS. They have plenty.

Vladdy much better recently. Romano sucking big time lately. Floating 89 MPH slider after slider over the plate and avoiding the 100 MPH fastball like Marner avoids contact.

A)We need 'em
B)They're worth...stuff
C)They cost nothing toward the cap

Marner is a hard sell to most teams, but the holy grail to a few. With the right picks/prospects/useful Plugs coming back, you can make more specific targeted trades for what you need. The S11M gives you the flexibility to do whatever the (frank) you want, in what might be a buyers market for free agent D-men.
If we go into next season with Riley as our 3rd best defence-man, and with a bunch of nearly ready prospects chomping at the bit, I doubt Marner will be missed as much as some think.
People are too worried about losing the trade and maybe getting chirped by other fan bases, rather than looking at the potential team after the dust settles.
You can lose the trade, and still have a better chance at winning the cup.

- oldstyle

Which useful plugs and which teams are the ones who consider him a holy grail? Since there's only a few surely you can name them all.

Your first and second points contradict each other. You need the cap space to get good players so in essence, yes the space is a prize. Considering that's how 80% of the posters here consider it.

This point makes me laugh all the time. In what world would the rest of the league not know what was going on if they press boxed a 11 million dollar player?
In addition, in what world would ANY agent want or try to push their player to sign in Toronto after that sort of treatment? Think you'll ever get a player back in Toronto with that type of treatment on a discount? It'll be an overpay every time.
In what world has a team ever done this in the league to a "cancer"? Or just created one out of thin air?

In what world is a player a cancer because he chose not to waive his NMC that the team gave him? Like you want the team to play hardball with the player by putting him in the press box but you're all pissed off when the player treats the team the same way and doesn't waive?

My personal belief is if the leafs don't trade him this summer then you simply deal with it in the off season or trade deadline. Deadline if the leafs pull a Tampa/Colorado and miss the playoffs with superstars on the team.

Have to say, I enjoy watching Maurice lose it at the officials. He's a pure goon coach and his team gets away with alot and often. Rangers are no angels for sure. Trouba and Bennett each get away with a suspendable play virtually every game. But watching Tkachuk run the goalie and pick fights with the opponents smallest stars is funny. Winning in the playoffs is aided by what teams can get away with to a large extent.
