Sheldon Keefe said coaches reached out to him and said they are happy he now gets to coach in the “real NHL”

EF ripped those coaches saying he wouldn’t want to hire any of the coaches that said that.

There is some real anti leafers employed in the NHL.

Bet down the road if those same coaches need a job and get an offer from TO, it'll be real enough for them then.

Seems like every thread keeps going around in circles. Run it back. Trade Marner. Trade JT. Repeat. They will both be back, so spend whatever cap we have to bolster the D or try to get a legit goalie. There is still opportunity to improve at the TDL to hopefully, (finally), have a deep playoff run. It's not ideal IMO, but our hands are basically tied and the only real option we have is to run it back for one more year. It's likely going to be a very similar year to this past one, but hopefully Tre has the ability to make some more impactful trades at the TDL.

So what you're saying is that we need to change it up and trade Matthews and Woll for Antonio Gramsci?

Of course.

Toronto gives you money, visibility, potential after career job in the media and guarantee you won't work past early may.

It's a great job.

But in Montreal you get to golf starting in early April and you have Chez Paree to keep you warm in the winter months.

It's possible. But not always. So we can't promise that to any coach we hire.

And hey, if strip clubs are your thing, Chez Paree is a fine place.

I find this weird.

The Negro leagues had talent but were not anywhere near as talented as the major leagues. Insofar as I'm aware they weren't even really organized. It's not really an apples:apples comparison.

It's a vain attempt to right the wrongs of the past - but people have to accept that sometimes the wrongs of the past are there to serve as an example of how to be right in the future. You can't correct that.

If it is essentially a run it back year, you have to maximize what Berube can do for the team and that means adding a lot more tough, gritty, defensive minded forwards and defenders. Berube is actually a career loser in the NHL as a head coach. His winning % sucks and half his seasons ended in missing the playoffs or 1st round exits.

He won a Cup under very specific circumstances that included having Pietrangelo, Parayko, Dunn and Bouwmeester as his top-4 (who he played A LOT) and Binnington who was on fire in net. If you want Berube to succeed, you have to do your best to give him what he had when he had his most success.

If they keep Tavares, he has to move to LW to earn that cap hit. Stamkos moved to LW and scored 40. The Leafs need the same from Tavares. And he can still take FOs occasionally because he's good at it. So he basically becomes a situational LW/C.

Don't think the Leafs can afford to get him a goalie in year 1 but might be able to after Tavares' contract expires. In the mean time, they have 18 AAV in cap space. If they trade Jarnkrok, Kampf, Reaves and McCabe, they'll have about 26 AAV in cap space.

Trade Liljegren and Robertson to SJS for Rutta. Another experienced, Cup winning RHD. He can play in the top-four in case of injury and has a low cap hit for 1 year.

You re-sign Domi, sign Joshua, Blueger, Clutterbuck, Lafferty and Perry. Use most of them as experienced, physical, shutdown, PKers and give Berube an arsenal of defensive weapons. The offensive guys we have will be better insulated and can focus on just doing what they need to do best; score goals.

Tavares (40) | Matthews (55) | Marner (35) - 130 goals
Joshua (15) / Domi (15) / Nylander (35) - 65 goals
Knies (20) | Blueger (10) | Clutterbuck (10) - 40 goals
McMann (15) | Lafferty (10) | Perry (10) - 35 goals

Dewar / Gregor (all extra forwards combined) - 10 goals

Sign Pesce, OEL and DeMelo. Probably costs in the range of 16 AAV combined.

Rielly (10) | Pesce (5) - 15 goals
OEL (12) | DeMelo (3) - 15 goals
Benoit (3) | Rutta (4) - 7 goals

Leafs were 2nd in GF last year with 298. That team could score as high as 330 if everything goes perfect. But even if it didn't, they could still score at a top 5 pace based on sheer star talent.

The difference is, with a line-up like that, you have a more effective defense, a more effective PK and a more effective PP (by adding OEL more than anything).

Leafs were 21st in GA. 23rd on the PK. If you can put together a roster that can still score 290-300 goals but is more coachable for Berube defensively, the Leafs become a much harder team to play against, especially in the playoffs.

In net, you can't rely on Woll so you have to get a cheap 1A. I'd try to acquire Thompson from Vegas but if not him, Talbot, Brossoit, Stolarz etc. You go after a goalie next year when you have a better idea of what you have in Woll and more cap space after Tavares' contract is over.

Perhaps a more accurate 2nd shot would have been year round construction and crumbling bridges thanks to mob and city officials being so closely linked?

You obviously took a lot of time to consider this and type it all out. Realizing Marner and JT will probably be here on opening night is a prudent move. I honestly don't see most of these moves happening, but I don't hate them all. I've seen worse suggested than this. The only minor niggling point I would make is that Rutta is pretty much a plug at this point in his career. His numbers only looked decent because Hedman was dragging him around. To be fair, he did his job in Tampa and was not noticeable on most nights, which is good for a player like him. But, he's more of #7 or #8 than a #6.

I'd go with somebody like Dumba over Rutta. Both have about the same foot speed, but Dumba is more physical. Rutta is an older Lily.

Dumba is tiny and he's garbage defensively. I'd rather have the Cup winner with size who can kill penalties. The experience factor is huge, he's a RHD and can be trusted a lot more than Liljegren at this point.

With Tampa Bay, he looked fantastic. With San Jose he looked horrible. On Pittsburgh he looked average. And that's all they need for a 3rd pair PKer.

I don't think it'll take 5 more years.

But only time will tell.

It's ok. We've had our share of good playoffs run in the last 20 years, we can wait a a little.

And yeah construction in Montreal is stupid.
