Didn't you say JT could be moved?
And yet... he has a NMC too. - Nasty_Duck
Different situation.
That has nothing to do with refusing to waive though.
Try again. - Nasty_Duck
Tavares does not benefit from refusing to waive if the Leafs make it clear they do not want him to return. He does benefit from accepting a trade to a different team (possibly a contender if they can get his cap hit low enough) because he gets another shot at winning a Cup as he has less time to win a Cup at 34. He also gets a head start on finding his next team to finish his career.
Marner, however, doesn't have to waive because he's a 27 year old who could hit free agency. Losing Marner for nothing really hurts the Leafs but doesn't hurt himself in the process. It just gives him more big offers from more teams in his prime.
Completely different situations you should take more time to consider. |

I like Blueger, Joshua and Lindholm. I'd add them if Tavares gets traded and you could sign all 3 for under 11 AAV.
Zadorov, unfortunately, is going to get paid big time and he's a LHD. Same for Montour. He's a RHD but has Bryan McCabe vibes. Don't think he'd be worth the money he's going to get offered if he leaves Florida.
I'd rather target OEL as a LHD because his PP numbers are very strong over his career. And defensively, we need RHD like Pesce / DeMelo. I think you could sign Pesce, OEL and DeMelo for between 13-15 AAV and it would revamp the entire blueline very quickly.

I spend the entire 18 AAV we do have on bringing in tougher, more playoff sturdy players and improve the D. Bring in a cheap 1A to split time with Woll. Sign or acquire a bigger ticket goalie once Tavares' contract expires.
I move him to LW (like Stamkos) and hope you can squeeze enough offense out of him in his final run with Matthews and Marner. Put Domi at 2C with Nylander because they'd compliment each other pretty well. You can put Tavares at C occasionally for the FOs for situational reasons.
When Tavares' contract expires, you don't bring him back, not even at a discount. He's going to be 35, won't put up offensive numbers, can't skate all that great and defensively, not a strong bottom-six candidate.
And I'm serious, I wouldn't take him at even 5 AAV at 35+. I'd rather sign or acquire a player in his prime than trying to go back to that depleted well. |

It's awesome the players will do what you want so it fits your narrative.
JT has no reason to waive and he likes TO, so he could sign a very team-friendly deal once his current deal is up. Or not.
IMO both players finish the season in TO.
No idea what happens after that.

He has reasons to waive if they tell him they don't want him anymore.
If Tavares doesn't waive, it's because he hasn't been asked. He won't volunteer to be traded but he won't be asked to waive either. And that's the problem. The same idiots who signed him won't admit their mistake and try to trade him because they'd be implicating themselves as the reason why they're in this mess in the first place.
The idea of signing him at 35+ is idiotic and if the team is trying to get him to do that, they're only going back to a style of building a team that won't win them meaningful games. |

My understanding is Utah is hot and dry in the summer and cold and snowy in the winter. Rich athletes' accountants have ways of flattening the tax differences. Finally, some players might want to play in a metropolitan hockey mecca rather than in front of a bunch of Mormons in butt(frank) nowhere. - Zezel
In Utah he wouldnât get put on the front page of a newspaper in silhouette with a Missing in action headline.

Solid add for sure.
Bert and Domi
Nylander and Keller
Knies and Crouse
Would be some serious top 9 wingers.
(btw Keller had 20 less points than Marner at $4m less...soon to be $5.5m less...and both of his balls have dropped)
"Mitchy you have won an all expenses paid trip to SLC Utah, tell him all about it Jim" |
