I guess the logic is that you need to funnel through the talent, hence there are more rounds at that level and it then lowers when you go pro...

NHL went from 9 to 7 fairly recently (Mark Streit was a 9th round pick in 2004! Last time we had 9).

I'd expect it to drop to 5 rounds next. I think there are still some very interesting gambles at these ranks.

Mind you, this sould make draft picks even more valuable.
