that often happens for sure.

age-wise Zegra and Necas would fit the bill, but it's the flaws to their game and the cost to acquire them that also need to be considered.

- Pat1993

Agreed, we don't need another smurf at center (Zegras) .... we also require our centermen to play a 2 way game.

As for Necas, I like his size but he might be too pricey, admittedly I don't know too much about him to form an opinion.

oh sure, I agree.

but that player could still be described as a "poor man's player XYZ", despite the good life and the millions he's making.

- Pat1993

If you wanna give me $14 million, you can call me whatever the (frank) you want.

While I don't have 2 Stanley Cup rings to stuff in my ears like Roy, I am sure a wad of $100 bills will also work.

I meant, retail Laine, as in keep him.

Doesn’t sound like it. New GM though so maybe they would now.

to his defense, anyone playing on that Anaheim roster could look soft as butter, not a whole lot of team compete going on over there for now.

Yeah, but if they manage to pull this off, we could have fun, exciting hockey for years, and if they get lucky and hot at the right time, maybe even a cup.

That is gonna be a lot of fun.

If they can pull it off.

Beats 30 years of mediocrity as a bubble team and seat-of-your pant management to fill holes in the lineup. This is a path to perpetual mediocrity.

At least now there seems to be a coherent plan and hope for a better future ... I, for one, welcome this change in philosophy.

Smurf is a mindset.

Zegras can be 6'0 all he wants, he could be 5'4 and it wouldn't change anything.

Gorton and Hughes seem to be two very bright hockey minds with different experiences that complement each other well. there sure doesn't seem to be a "leader VS puppet" dynamic between them, as many were suggesting when they were initially hired by the habs.

Yes it would.

Harder to pull off a Michigan.

then he would have nothing he was known for...

no, it implies that someone is small, you're the one giving it a new meaning that doesn't really apply. that's why different words exist, like smurf VS soft.

Martin St-Louis was a smurf but he sure played big.

well, if Hughes and Gorton are smart, and they decide to acquire Laine after all, it'll probably be because the price to acquire him is incredibly low for a guy with his skillset. like him or not he's a very good hockey player, and if he ever got it going here with this group of guys in MTL it could become a genius move.

don't see it happening, but hey, you never know loll.
