Saw this online and had to share.

Lineup for the Leafs final game of 14-16 (they drafted Matthews that summer).

Marner still in the OHL this season also but Jesus what a hot mess of a lineup. Lol

I recall going to a game in Vancouver where Greening was the best player on the ice 😳

Horachek did his job and should be living comfortably on a nice beach somewhere

(frank) no, I don't want anyone but the Leafs to win the Cup. I hate every other team. The greatest outcome in the Finals this year would be if a sinkhole opened up and swallowed both teams.

I remember cheering against the Leafs, I believe it was against New Jersey, in their final game of the season, just before they drafted Matthews. Leafs held a lead after 2 periods but then collapsed in the third. My wife, just before she became my wife, was wondering why I was cheering so hard for the Leafs to lose in that final game. I had to explain to her that they had to hit rock bottom, before they could ever become competitive for a playoff spot again. She thought I was nuts. Every-time Matthews has a big night I have to point it out to her about that discussion back then. Something like reverse psychology when women hit you over the head with sh!t that happened 30 years ago.

I am unsure if this will be an unpopular statement on this thread but:
In mutual agreement, Mitchell Marner will be in the starting lineup for the Toronto Maple Leafs when the season starts Tuesday, October 10th 2024. Management believes this agreement is best for the player, and best for the team. There will be changes and new opportunities for other players as the summer progresses to ensure the continued improvement of the organization but Mitch will remain a Maple Leaf.

I can envision the meeting in Utah.

“Guys what should we do for season 1?”

“Jimmy you have an idea”?

Jimmy - “ya Copy Maine”

Everyone cheers and starts to chant “Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy”!!!

(Maine did it better)

The Leafs and Lightning should protest the colours for their jerseys.
It's to close to the colour they have now.

If Marner doesn't wave and is in the starting lineup for game 1, he'll get lit up like a Roman candle by the fans and the press. It'll be ugly until he's traded or walks in free agency.

That’s a long way of saying he won’t be moved. The reality is he might be / he might not be nobody really knows until closer to training camp.

I’m a bit surprised the league is allowing it to be honest. You would think they would want some new / fresh colours but maybe they have no say in it?

The colours are staying it’s just the name that’s temporary right? If so I feel
Like they could have done better but maybe they can makes these colours work with a much different jersey design when they get a permanent team name.

THIS THIS 1000000 TIMES THIS!

But…..if a Canadian team is going to bring the cup “home” I only want it to be the Leafs. As Dozzer mentioned if it’s any other Canadian team that fan base will be insufferable even if a Leaf fan sent a sincere congrats.

Plus the anger in Montreal/Ottawa/ Calgary/ Edmonton and Vancouver fan bases if the Leafs do it would be chocolatey deliciousness washed down with a gallon of blue Leaf Koolaid!!!!!

- Cush29

I think that's the problem with the idea of rooting for a Canadian team to win the cup.

You know whichever fan base wins will be absolutely insufferable.

True, but imagine how insufferable Florida's 38 fans will be when they win.

You know it will happen. The press will whip up a hate session on Marner and most of the fanbase will be convinced to hate on him. Right or wrong, it'll happen.

Once Florida gets their Cup, I expect that they'll start falling back ever so slightly. Players looking for big payday's, when their contracts come up, will leverage their Stanley Cup winner status and look elsewhere. Florida will still be a top 4 team, but 2 years running it back to the finals will take it's toll. It's hard to regroup, after 2 long playoff runs. Their bodies get fatigued due to short summers and winning it all will take the edge out of pushing full out the year after. A hangover of sorts.
- PrinceLH

You make a really important point. Teams have 3 or 4 year peak performance years in their competitive cycle for SC contention. They will begin to fall off because they lose important depth players (priority is on keeping star players). And, they also pay a price in the fatigue that comes from going deep into the playoffs on successive years.

So very good teams peak, begin to fade and yet, they still hang unto their highest paid star players hoping to catch some magic. Chicago, Pittsburgh, Tampa....it is the same for everyone.

I doubt that very highly. Marner is loved by many of the fans (especially kids)& is an exceptional talent and producer and a regular season darling.

Now if his regular season play was to fall off a cliff maybe but I don't see that happening at all.

Since it's nearly the end of the season and that means stupid and 'will never happen' trade proposals............nevermind if the proposal is even good I'm just having fun now and thinking about pissing off Jets fans in this case. lol

Marner to the Blue Jackets

Laine 2M retained ++ to the Leafs (or less +'s but more money retained)

CBJ has some nice pieces the Leafs might want like Adam Fantilli (sure CBJ would likely never move him but one can dream) or one of the 3 big RHD the CBJ have or another piece.

Imagine how mad Jets fans would be if Laine was a leaf and absolutely lit it up! lol

Laine is an interesting gamble for a team not close to the cap. If he somehow got his head on straight, he's a guy you know can easily score more than 30 goals a year, maybe even 40.

I wouldn't mind the Habs taking a swing at him, they have the cap space for the next two years so if he turns into a massive failure, it's not big deal.

Of course, this is conditional to the cost being extremely low.

Montour will probably be the first piece to disappear. He'll leverage his new found Cup winner status into a big contract. Someone will overpay for the prestige of a Cup winning top 4 defenseman. Others will follow and father time will catch up to Bobrovsky sooner than later. Florida traded all of their top end draft picks going forward. Their pipeline of young talent won't be there to replace key players moving forward. Leafs for all of their faults, do have a few good young players, mostly forwards, moving into positions to replace a number of journeymen players next year.

Yeti and the logo is a cooler

Yeti makes no sense.

First off, yeti refers to the cryptozoological bipedal hominid of the Himalayas.

Second, Utah isn't even a hotbed of sasquatch sightings.

"There will be pain" !!

The Shanaplan was born in 2014 and it was good in that it simply meant that the Leafs weren't going to patch and try to win and they were finally going to burn it down and patiently rebuild. Old man Fletch came in and treated everybody like a commodity. Garage sale this poop ....take the best offer. We were all down with the plan.

The plan worked great in terms of landing high end picks. They nailed the 3 high picks (which doesn't always happen) and nabbed 3 all-stars.

The problem was they stayed too patient, IMO. Losses to the Caps and Boston in years 1-3 - totally understandable. The loss to the Jackets ...uggh ...Covid weirdness ...(frank), ok, I'll stay patient.

The loss to the Habs in 21' - for me was the first missed opportunity to pivot. The cap was flat and they knew it'd be flat for a couple more years. They handed out big long contracts to the Core and tried to win with bits and pieces around the edges. That's when the plan went off the rails.

Marner is a very talented player. Yes, he has a huge contract and a new one is due.

All things considered management must know they cannot win a trade. I think they are just stalling hoping the fan base calms down. Marner should be a Leaf on opening night.

Most of the Leaf cap issues will dissipate with the completion of the Tavares contract.

Surely, there must be some Leaf fans who are beginning to change their opinions. Are you really serious about moving Marner for a goalie and a couple of middle of the road players?

It's hard to force 32 teams to have different colour schemes.
