Young teams always look for some sort of veteran leadership to guide the rookies and younger players while they develop.

Plus I thought I saw that the Sharks need to reach the cap floor. Would make more sense to retain cap (on him or someone else) to achieve this than pay him that full amount, but could be a factor.

Well first off, the question that must be asked is, why would any team in full rebuild mode want Goodrow? Why would any of the other bottom, non playoff teams want Goodrow? If any of the playoff teams want him, why not wait till he is then bought out and then resign him?

There are always phone calls made behind the scenes about whether a player wants to play somewhere.

People could be looking way too much into this, the Rangers placed Goodrow on waivers with the hope someone might grab him but with the belief that the Cup finals could have been over last night and they just want to buy him out sooner rather than later giving him the chance to sign with another team before the other free agents hit the market on July 1st.

A few reasons that I can think of:
- Great mentor for the youth. Former cup winner who has NEVER missed playoffs since his first year of major junior hockey
- Can play special teams which eases the pressure off other top players
- They have the opportunity to claim him without having to compete against other teams for $$ and term

When we signed Goodrow, we were retooling. I get that it wasn't a full rebuild and Goodrow then is different than Goodrow now, but the reasonings for bringing him here were similar

Now the return is questionable...That should net you another pick.

Agreed! Can't believe CAL retained salary + they're not getting this year's 10OA pick. Fitz did pretty well here IMO

Hence why Goodrow won't be in San Jose.

Somewhat. Markstrom is 34. Not really a young lad. We've seen goalies regress around that age or very shortly thereafter. Not saying it's going to happen here, but...never know with a goalie turning 35 a few months into this coming season.

Originally when I read about the Markstrom deal I thought it to be a fair trade for both sides. Upon hearing that Calgary retained 30% salary ---- WOOF!
Calgary got fleeced!

He is old tho. That’s the one thing that kept the return down. 25 first rders are pretty well regarded apparently. Bahl is the new trend of D that teams want too. I don’t think they did too bad
