The Sabres picked up Byram knowing approximately what they'd need to pay him moving forward, and clearly it won't be too much. They needed a top 4 puck moving D with high upside and low age that wouldn't cost too much because of Power and Dahlin. This was done intentionally.

Another reason why they can't justify Jokiharju's new contract. Unless he's under 2.5. Trade the guy, let's go already.

Do you think Adams has made a trade by accident yet?

For example, Granato slammed the table which knocked the phone over, causing it to call Minnesota, Adams was ordering 5, double doubles which triggered the trade?

Botts had Hagel and Holmberg

so far Adams has Lindgren and Bloom in my book

This is hilarious.

Adams will go down in history as the GM who traded away the most Stanley cup winning players ever. That was the 5 year plan all along.

So a former 4th Overall pick who if he stays Healthy compares to Power. Say has a Fantastic year and out plays Power and the Sabres had there approximate. Well that could get interesting

The idea was two fold: change the dynamic in the bottom 9/along the center and add a D in the mold of Byram. Trading Mitts was the long term solution despite Mitts being a better player right now than Byram.

Good post, although I think they are pretty even in terms of quality of the better player now.

The injury concerns with Byram made the trade more even imo .

Byram really put his name on the map a couple Stanley cups ago

Power got prepaid based on his draft position of 1OA

I think we all believe he’s overpaid.

4OA might not seem like a huge difference, but I can’t see them being paid equally unless Bo really puts up some eye popping numbers

251 contracts have been signed since Owen Power in October. that's an average of 7.8 contracts per team. Zero by Buffalo

He doesn't have to be, even if he gets 7.75mill or so you are pushing 30mill on 3 Dman

I think that would be considered a major surprise, but you need to compare apples to apples. Byram has two years on Power. He was paid on fulfilled potential. Byram, you have more of an idea of what he can be. Not to say that they're both not still developing, because they are. But you've got a lot more tape on Byram. Kinda reminds me of a Montour. Wonder if he'll ever blow up.

Only reason he was available is because he flopped since they won. Which makes it pretty important that the Sabres put him in a place to succeed where the Avs couldn't. Perhaps injuries took a toll.

I would bet that Byram's next deal is 4 to high 5's.

What type of production are you anticipating for those #'s? Is he expected to be Dahlin's partner for this?

Power got paid on potential 1OA $.

Not based on his current underachieving self imo

That's ok. That's only a one year deal if signed. Common practice to qualify an RFA, work out a long term deal that is sometimes lower than the QO but more years attached. Brock Boeser had this.

Strange that you’ve been asking for an upgrade on defense for years, now we got that upgrade and your complaining about paying said defenseman.

Hopefully he costs less, but if he plays well, which I think we both want, he may cost more . Which would be good based on his good play?

Sure, but might be a bit different if he is Top pair and outplays that former 1A

Partners are fluid based on situation. Have no idea who his majority minutes are with. Samuelsson probably gets a lot of time with Dahlin. Byram may as well. (frank), maybe Power and Dahlin play a lot together.

Byram isn't on PP1, may replace Power on 2. Maybe he gets 10g-35a. Middling defensive quality.

One is expected to be Dahlin's partner on the top pairing, the other is 2nd pairing.

It could be an arbitration situation if Adams doesn't pony up.

the concern is understandable but the move was made with this financial piece in mind.
