Marner will resign $12.5 x 8 = $100M. Because no team will give him $14.28 x 7.
Best he will get on open market is $13 x 7= $91M. If he is smart his team will see the wisdom of taking $95-$100M over 8 years to stay and win with his home town team

Tavares will have to take $6/yr or less to stay with the team

In 2019-20, the salary of big 4 took up 49.64% of the cap

In 2025-26, the salary of big 4 will take up 47.01% of the cap (assuming cap will be $92 mil).

12.5 is too much.
He should be making Willy money, especially if he expects an NMC thrown in.

Pastrnak makes 11.5 and he's better than Marner.

I think leaf fans are a little jaded about JT.

Across the league he was 30th in points for centers(65 and 29 were goals) and played 80 games. He is a steady and relatively healthy player. Guys like Malkin who only scored 67 pts this past year and are older signed for 6.1 million during the lower cap era.

Cap is going up in the next few years. I don't see why JT won't get 5 to 6 million on a short term deal with the leafs. It would be great if he took less but fans shouldn't expect it.

Somewhat agree and somewhat don’t. Malkin and company have 3 cups and other personal accomplishments when then took those retirement contracts and we can see how they’re weighing down the Pens. Anything more than $6M for JT is too rich for the Leafs. Another team can feel free to sign him for more.

Agreed but Pasta signed 2 seasons before and it’ll be 3 seasons if he waits till UFA. Inflation cap going up, plus the higher taxes on Toronto will make it hard sell to give him pasta money

Oh I agree on the MORE than 6. These older centers like Giroux seem to be right around there. Just saying noone should be fully surprised should it happen.

Malkin does have more cups than JT but he was also older when he re-signed so it's kind of a trade off imo. Same as Kopitar who's 35 making 10 million and put up 70 pts. He signed his deal ages ago.

Pasta's new deal kicked in this year... so not sure where the 3 years comes from.

I don't think the Leafs care about the players tax issues. All they care about (besides revenues) is Cap space to ice a competitive/championship team.

Willy pays same taxes as Marner right?

The idea perpetuated the Toronto media is that Leaf’s have no leverage. Marners camp can decline to give a list of teams or decline to sign at all and walk for nothing. In truth that’s only half the story. The leafs have to create positive incentive for the player and his camp. What do we know? We know he wants to get paid and we know he would love to stay in Toronto. So you capitalize on this. You don’t low-ball him because yo ur e just shooting your self in the foot.

It’s in Leaf’s best interest for Leafs to sort this asap and MM’s best to delay. Leafs have to change this narrative.

If the Leafs offer is $11.5X8 = $92 there might be enough temptation for MM to play chicken and see what he can get on the UFA market if he has a good season. Even if another team offer $12x7 =$84M. $the 8M left on the table can be easier to stomach if his new team plays in a lower tax jurisdiction.

An offer of $95M-$100M for 8 years on the table to sign now is a bully offer and forces his camp to make a decision now because Leaf’s will not go over AM aav so the offer can only go down from here.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I could not remember if it was 2 or 3 years.

Pasta signed in Mar ‘23 because he needed a new contract for the 23-24 season. MM does not need a new contract until 25-26 season. Hence 2 years.

While MLSE may not care (I’m sure they are cognizant though) about the tax implications. The other half of the equation signing the contact….that is the player.. sure as heck does. Cost of living is high in Toronto. ROR took the same contract to play in Nashville.

Despite yours and my thoughts on MM, there are tons of GMs that see him as a premium player in his prime. If you want the player to do what you want him to do them you have to give him the right incentive. This is not 1875 and you can’t treat players like poop like few others have been suggesting and then wonder why the Stamkos’s of the world will not come play in Toronto

Not saying it's impossible for him to get 12.5 if he wants tonplay hardball.

I'm just suggesting it could be a mistake for the Leafs to do it as it will impact their need to improve the team.

So is the Stanley Cup gonna come out ce soir? I'm gonna give a McDavid benefit of the doubt to the Oil here and say they win another one to not go down easy.

One way to win over the fanbase...sign a 1-year deal for $2-3M. Give the team tons of flexibility to win a Cup. But it's a handshake deal that next year we extend for 8 years x $13M. So he gets all the Tavares money. Marner takes a huge financial gamble and the fans idolize him for that. Prove how much you love the Leafs you Mitch.

Tough look for bonus laden contracts with NMCs. "We can and we will" has caused more problems for this franchise than it ever should have.

Another year out of the playoffs and Brady will be singing the same tune that his brother did in Calgary.

I hope they move him... "running it back" would be insane.

Also, haven't been on here in awhile- how does anyone put up with the pop-ups and ads everywhere- it's so gross and annoying.

It's been less than 20% of those years watching this core (compete arguably better than a lot of other cores of other teams) and NOW you want to switch?

Gadzooks! Thank goodness he's signed 3 more years at 8.25 and not currently being walked to UFA with full trade protection by his childhood favorite team.

So Chynowetth goes to the Jets bench. Vincent out with the Jackets which isnt a surprise at all.

Only question I have is do we need a change with our bench on the goalie coach still?

At this point hope Florida just ends it here tomorrow. Too much debate, speculation, and rumour. The cone of silence had been pretty impressive given its Marner, Tavares etc etc. sooner the season is over and this is sorted the better really. There really isnt going to be any way to avoid fan dissapointment at this point. Sooner can just rip the band aid off the better.

Gotta just sit back and chill 'til next week. Buyouts, trades and who's planning to sign who will get rolling next week. One week to go Roadsie ...

Pretty much.

Like I said for Leags its gonna be people unhappy no matter which way it goes so... but cant blame Buliot's sentiment of tossing in the towel either. A good many might do it regardless of direction this goes.

Wrong. Crosby, Malkin, Letang are plenty fair value. Here's an exercise, find the centers on UFA contracts cheaper and better than Malkin this year. Trocheck is the only one I find.

Euro 2024 will take me to mid-July.

Then the Open.

It will be a lean diet of the Olympics, out of the playoffs Blue Jays and CFL football for August, and then the NFL and college football in September.

I don’t even need to think about the Leafs until opening night.
