I read a rumor somewhere of a possible trade with NJ involving Matheson and their #10 pick. More involved as well, but do you do a package like that if it gets you #10?

I have a hunch the habs inquired about him, as they should do any time a player with legit top 6 potential is made available, but they backed down because of the asking price (too much risk to be giving up any quality assets).

Would you have done like Josh Anderson for PLD no salary retained?

A bit similar to what Washington offerred.

that's sort of what I had in mind too if a deal had any chance to be made with MTL, I'd be asking salary retention, and/or they'd be taking back Anderson, Gallagher or Dvorak.

thing is though, I was giving PLD the benefit of the doubt even when he just started in LA, but now he has the official "damaged goods" label for sure... I don't know if there was some beef going on in the locker room but the kings wanting to back out of that contract after only one year makes him look rather bad lol.

Yep. I dont think it wod have been à good idea especially with the criticism he would get for not living up to his salary. 8 years of complaints on hb is long.

... but $8.5m until 2031.

Oh a chance it works out.

I'd like Anderson gone, but not that much.

yeah but I'd negotiate some salary retention on PLD's contract as well...

I agree though, I still probably wouldn't make the move, it's too big of a red flag for too much term.

in WAS there shouldn't be too much pressure for him, with Kuznetzov gone he's basically there to help out Ovi break that goals record, which will probably be the caps' main focus until it gets done.

I think they traded for him because they are desperate to find someone to help Ovi get the record, and this was perhaps what they believed as the best option out there available to them... I really don't think they give a poop about the longer term repercussions once the record is broken.

exactly... although it's still a questionable move considering it shouldn't take Ovi more than two more seasons to break the record, while PLD's contract ends in 2031. if he doesn't figure things out it's only gonna slow down an eventual rebuild.

Once Ovi gets the record, he will retire and they will be in full rebuild anyways.

2 years, maybe 3 if things go real bad.

oh I know, just saying that if he's such a Pierre-Luc Douchebois he could mess with the culture and work ethic they'll be trying to implement with the younger guys, which obviously isn't ideal.

Yeah.

Just too many things can go wrong.

Also, the Caps #1 goalie is Charlie Lindgren, with no other veteran goalie in their system.

I mean, good on Lindgren - he had a pretty decent year in 2023/24, and will likely get a decent contract this summer, but that is another risk they are taking. Does he have it to it again? He had a few rough months mid-season and did not look that great in the playoffs.

Not that Kuemper was the answer either (based on his play).

I am not sure the Caps are even about winning at this point.
