Marner has never scored 100pts in the regular season.
He's also been fairly mediocre in the post-season. But yes, let's re-sign him to 12-13M because he's a nifty player. |

Dammit, thought he had a couple season with over 100pts but nope, 99 and 97pts were his top 2 seasons.

My dislike for this idea is presuming there ARE better players in the off season. Constantly kicking the can down the road never leads to anything.

Sign Tanev and someone else, pay Marner's signing bonus, trade him after that. |

A bit of a damned if you do and damned if you dont with trading Marner. Trading before the bonus limits teams and possible assets coming back but you could get a 2024 1st round pick that could be impactful sooner.
Waiting to trade after the bonus opens up teams who dont want to pay 10 million but could only get a 2025 first round or later. They dont have a 2025 first rounder so I see the merit.

He reminds me of Phil Kessel - the perennial 40 goal scorer who never scored 40. |

He’s already at $10.9 signed as a RFA, it’s going to cost notably more than a $600K raise to resign him as an UFA in the midst of his prime. |

if he wants to stay, he will have to compromise. If he is all about money, yeah, I agree, he is gone. |

He won’t accept $11.5 throughout the season which will make the drama ridiculously stupid. He would wait til the off-season and what the other offers are.
People need to remember that after 9 years (upcoming season and following 8) the cap will be up around $120 mill. $12.5 will be around 10% of it at the end and I’m willing to bet that’s what his agent will be after. |

Players don’t give up millions to stay. Midst of his prime, last chance he’ll ever have to sign significantly. Either Toronto gives it to him or another team will. |

Not doing too much this off season.
You were open to kicking the can down the road for 8 years (oh look at Washington blah, blah blah).
Whats one more year.
Roll it all back for the next 5 years then rebuild.
Trade them all, trade no one....it doesnt matter. |

Sure don't have to do a lot this offseason. Doing too much can be as disastrous as doing too little.
You have misconstrued my thoughts but maybe I wasn't clear.
I never said "kick the can" down the road like Washington. I said they never reset and gave up on their core stars. They continually went for it which is what I prefer the leafs to do as well.
If you roll it all back then might as well trade Matthews considering he's taking up too much of the cap to not be competitive. Besides he would just keep them from getting good draft picks. |

nothing wrong with taken a shorter contract like what Matthews did. |
