Hold the team hostage? Like willie did to get his 7.4m per? Luckily for us, he did refuse to play as thats the only reason his cap hit was lowered to 6.9.

All our stars are overpaid, whats one more lol.
11.6 per max, if not move him.

Leafs arent winning anyway.
Roll it back.
Trade everyone, trade no one...doesnt matter.

Willy at $7.5m was 100% fair. The year Willy signed his deal he sucked, but the next year he scored 31 and had 59 points and sat pretty close to Sebastian Aho - who was making $8.5m. The next year he may have compared to Aho a little less favourably, but the next three he had over 30 once and over 40 goals twice.

NOW Willy is overpaid.

Auston Matthews is 100% fair. Name any player in the post-cap era who has scored 60 or more twice? His name is Auston Matthews. At his peak Alexander Ovechkin was awarded a contract that would equate to $16.8m by the current cap standard after scoring 65.

With Marner it's hard. Look since he started in the NHL in 2016 he is top-10 in points in the league. The guys he passes in percentage signed before him and with the cap frozen for years it's a bad look - but his contract, while certainly not giving an inch, probably fits in with where he sits in the NHL since he was drafted:

Connor McDavid @ 16.7%
Leon Draisaitl @ 11.3%
Nathan MacKinnon @ 15.3%
Nikita Kucherov @ 11.9%
Artemi Panarin @ 14.3%
David Pastrnak @ 13.6%
Sidney Crosby @ 14.5%
Auston Matthews @ 15.9%
Brad Marchand @ 8.4%
Mitch Marner @ 13.4%

Still, i wouldn't want to pay him more than 11.6m per.....and im sure his agent may want more than that.
Im all about playoffs performance and still year he didnt perform, was great last year but missed a big opportunity this year.
But with that said, i still wouldnt trade him for the sake of trading him and because of this one tight cap year coming up.
We'll see what Tre does.

It's not like defending Marner is an easy thing to do.

We have talked about how Marner uses his skating and edge work to excel. Now it is an opinion based on observation, but I think it's widely held as an acceptable position on Marner's game.

In 21-22 Marner's top skating speed was 22.59mph, which was in the 69th percentile in the NHL. He had 96 bursts over 20mph, which was in the 66th percentile. 3 times he exceed 22mph which was also in the 69th percentile.
The playoffs that year his top skating speed was 21.11mph which was below the 50th percentile mark and never did burst over 22mph. Because these stats are cumulative to games played and the Leafs bowing out early, it's hard to compare cumulative stats across the playoffs - all of the Leafs are typically below the 50th percentile.

In 22-23, the regular season saw Marner slow to 22.11mph, which was below the 50th percentile, but he did burst over 20mph 113 times, which was in the 78th percentile. He only exceed 22mph once.

In the playoffs this dropped to 21.43mph avg speed, with no bursts over 22, and 14 over 20 (73rd percentile).

Last year Marner's regular season speed dropped to 21.73 (below 50th), he bursted over 20 only 40 times (below 50th) and never exceed 22mph.

In the playoffs this drops to 21.33 (below 50th), with only 4 bursts over 20mph and none over 22mph - again both below the 50th percentile.

Is Marner slowing down already? He just turned 27 - it doesn't seem likely. Have small injuries taken a toll? I have no idea, but losing 1.5mph in your skating speed becomes a very noticeable thing in a game of inches.

I am on the fence. He is a very important player at both ends of the rink. The Leafs have done nothing to protect him - which most teams would do with a player of his importance but smaller frame. If you make room for Marner, I think he can excel.

Even if they ran it back and let JT walk, can a team with $35m invested in 3 forwards in a $92m cap world work? I do think to round it out properly you can afford 2 big name forwards, 1 big name D, and then you round it out from there. It's not a guaranteed structure, obviously, but it's sensible.

Willie ostensibly hit 100pts last season and, over the last 4 seasons, has 307 pts in his last 296 games. There's no way he signs for less than 11.5M going forward.

He's not overpaid.
