Two straight years the Flyers drafted for need in the first round. Thats a bad process and the same fatal mistake of the Hextall era; filling out your future roster believing all your prospects and young players will hit their ceilings. If they really didn’t take Buium because they already had Andrae, York and Drysdale, it’s the same foolishness of not taking Heiskanen because you had Provorov, Sanheim and Myers and needed a center in Patrick.

Not the 1st round that most hoped for, but I do think the trade of 32 was smart. Next years draft is deeper and they should get a better player than what they would have gotten at 32 this year.
There’s numerous players that I wanted, but I had my hopes on (D)ickinson with the way things were playing out. Too bad SJ got him at 11.

So Flyers fans have gone from “wait til next year” for our chance at a Cup, to “wait til next year” for our chance at the playoffs, to “wait for next year” for our chance to draft well. This is not a good progression.

No, but there is not one scout, at least outside of the Flyers org, that rated Luchanko higher than Buium. Nada. You always draft BPA with your first round pick, period, and the Flyers failed to do so. What’s worse, they claimed that they were concerned that they had too many small Dmen already in the system. Let’s take a look at those guys:
York: a 2/3 guy
Drysdale: injury prone
Andrae: may never be more than an AHl/NHL tweener.

To not select a potential 1D because those 3 are in the organization is just woefully inept. Luchanko, at best, is a future 2C. You don’t pass on a potential #1 Dman for that.

Agree 100%. Honestly figured they were taking Eiserman when they moved back.

Here's what I found on NHL.com about Jett:

13. Philadelphia Flyers (from MIN) -- Jett Luchanko, C, Guelph (OHL)
NHL Central Scouting ranking: No. 20 (North American skaters)
Luchanko (5-11, 187) led Guelph with 74 points (20 goals, 54 assists) in 68 games, and won the William Hanley Trophy as the most sportsmanlike player in the Ontario Hockey League. He tied for second in the OHL with 30 power-play assists was ninth in face-off wins (663). Luchanko finished in the top three in four categories in the 2024 OHL Western Conference Coaches Poll, placing second for Smartest Player, Hardest Worker and Best Skater, and third for Best Shootout Shooter (he went 2-for-4 this season). The 17-year-old also finished first in the 2024 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game fitness testing in January, placing among the top five in six of 10 on-ice categories. The right-handed shot has been compared by some scouts to Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki.

NHL.com analysis: The Flyers move back one spot in a trade with the Wild and are able to fill a need for young center prospects. Luchanko is an explosive skater who projects to contribute on the top power play and penalty kill. It might not take long before Luchanko and Matvei Michkov become two-thirds of Philadelphia's top line.

Why did Helenius drop the way did? Did all teams 1-12 take BPA or did some take a need?
- WhiskeyMan

Many do not care what other teams did. Only what the Flyers did as that is what matters.

In my opinion, it was a really bad night for the Flyers. They reached at 13, and had 3 great options at 12 C, LW, or D. Luchanko was an absolute reach at 13, and anytime the Flyers reach in the 1st round it hasn’t turned out well. Two off the top of my head, Sam Morin and Jay O’Brien. They had 2 or 3 good players at 32 including a Russian LW to pair with Michkov.

I am fine with the swap of picks with Edmonton.

I thought it was a smart move actually....can't be any worse than 32 in the first round this year, and I doubt Edmonton gets back to the finals, so it should be a higher pick than 32 in a deeper draft.

From what I read there were like maybe 10 guys that were solid picks not franchise players but solid. After them the rest were just good.

Now I will wait tonsee whta happens at the trade deadline and what they do next draft. Next draft could be the draft that turns the team around.

I’m fine with the prospect…but not at 12…(0r 13)with a future 3rd rnd pick that he’ll probably trade away for futures anyways. Potential 2C …but ya how do you pass on what Buium did this year and how he looked.
- landros 2

Exactly!
Luchanko at 32? Sure, why not? At 12? Over Buium? No, thank you. Just a poor decision all the way around.

Apparently Chicago offered their 2025 1rst rnd pick UNPROTECTED to Columbus for #4 along with another pick….so the Flyers were never really in it if indeed they made an offer.

You have no idea how these kids will shake out. Luchanko has a big D+1 year and everyone’s singing a different tune. Youngest guy in the draft.

hawks will be back contending in a few years all while the flyers will be announcing a new era of orange.

"jonesy" is a fn clown.

- hello it's me 2050

All I do know is yesterday the Flyers got a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick in what is projected to be a deep draft in 2025, and apparently got the center they coveted. Not a bad day.

I have a hunch Flyers are going to unload some of next year’s draft capital to acquire a player to help them now. I know the broadcasts were saying it but no way in hell do the Flyers take a step back next season.

You’re right, I don’t know how it will all turn out. But I do know that every single scouting report and hockey publication available to the public had Buium rated MUCH higher than Luchanko.

Right, at the cost of a first, a second, and taking a middle six player they could have gotten at 20 instead of a projected top pairing dman.

I don't think it was a good day at all. I did like the #32 swap, but the rest of the day was a complete letdown for me.

I expect them to announce TK on Monday

Exactly, no one knows what these kids will turn into. The over reactions I have been reading are pathetic.

DB had a very good draft last year. He also increased the amount of draft picks in next year's draft which is supposed to be a better draft class.

Who knows what Jett will turn out to be. According to what I have been reading he should have gone around 17 to 19.
So not a huge leap.

They pick at 36 so trading 32 makes sense, is a player at 32 that much better at 36?

Arm chair GMs need to calm the f down, who on the board scouted all the players, watched more than a handful of their games? Who here went to the combine?

The question I keep going back to is this. How are the Flyers going to acquire elite talent?

Their strategy on draft night shows they don’t know either.

Maybe they don’t care and are gonna middle six the nhl to death.

Personally I would have drafted buium but I do like luchanko, I don't think the pick is as bad as everyone on here is crying about.

But regardless everyone should be happy we have 3 1st rd picks next year in a stronger draft class.

Not only a bad day…but the entire week they have not accomplished anything…after seeing what he did with this years draft capital how can you be confident in his ability to do something with it next year? I’m not seeing anything he’s doing or saying that gives me confidence that this guy is simply not in over his head. I hope I’m proven wrong….but he appears to have the same traits as the last two GMs and that’s not a good thing.

I think that’s a possible top 5 pick level defense and goaltending especially if there are any injuries. We may all get the tank we want just by incompetence. They will have to get the first overall pick because I don’t trust them not to screw up the choice anymore.

Also ne of the youngest players in the draft …. Current prospect report on cap friendly gives him an A+ rating.
