Nice! When I was I young I really considered forestry. Just to learn the skills, not really to work in the field. Excellent skills to have. ![](https://hbcf.s3.amazonaws.com/images/emoticons/thumbsup.gif) - The Judge
Yeah for sure!
Map reading and using a compass, tree id, basic outdoors skills.
I was pretty much the only guy who grew up spending a lot of time in the woods, and mostly everyone else in my class was from Toronto or some other city.
I don’t regret it, just didn’t gain a whole lot from it. Never went into forestry after. The money in AB was too good. |

Give Tanev a 6 year deal ((frank) it, give him 7) at $4M per. Since he ain't 35 yet and won't be until after he signs the deal, he can retire early with no consequences to the Leafs.
So give him a ridiculous signing bonus, so that he gets most of it and can just bail on the last year, maybe two.
If the League won't fix the CAP shenanigans, Leafs need to take complete advantage of what they can.
Boom! Off-season GM'ing done perfectly. |

Tanev exited with control 61 percent of the time last season, one of the best marks in the league. Very few retrieve as many pucks as he does, at 29.9 per 60. |

There is a lot of discussion about the structure of Tanev’s next contract, but first and foremost, we should note that Tanev was, once again, excellent last season. His work in the first two rounds of the playoffs was nothing short of special while matching up against elite players by and large.
Chris Tanev Round 1:
46:34 vs. Eichel at 5v5
Stars up 3-0
Chris Tanev Round 2:
68:43 vs. MacKinnon at 5v5
Stars up 3-1 |

Tanev is a solid addition and I am happy about it. I just hope the contract doesn't end up being Leafy.
I bet nobody is more stoked about it than Rielly.

Great.
It only took him 3 months this year to start playing well.
Was garbage most of last year. The king of hitting into a double play.
Good defensively though.
Nice to see him being useful at the plate. |

Saw on the Twitter-
If he gets 3 RBI's in today's game, he'll set an MLB record for most in a single week. And that's with one game being rained out after only 2 innings.
I've not fact checked this, and instead have decided it's true. |

Did the Leafs trade for Tanev so they could offer him an 8 year contract (or has that time now passed)?
My understanding is that all teams and agents can now talk to each other including the specifics of hard contract details....they just cannot sign a contract until tomorrow.
What is the exact advantage the Leafs gained by trading for Tanev's negotiation rights?
The free agency period officially begins a few days before July, allowing the teams and Unrestricted Free Agent (UFAs) to discuss contracts. A. An unrestricted free agent can be signed on July 1st. However, teams can begin negotiating with UFAs a few days prior to this date during the free agency interview period. |

The Leafs can only offer a 7 year deal to Tanev I do believe.
also I do believe the talk to the ufa was removed in the last cba
by getting Tanev rights give the exclusive time to iron out a contract without any other distractions |

Last year a team came in and offered Schenn an absurd contract that swayed him away from re-signing with the Leafs.
To avoid that happening again, they got exclusive signing rights to get it done before history repeats itself. |

This and it gives them a day or two to work out the contract details. Having that one signed will help them know what they can spend tomorrow.
Maybe it also lets them re-sign a guy like Domi before he goes to market. |

Much like last season with the first-round pick of Easton Cowan that raised a lot of eyeballs, Clark and the Leafs found their guy, weren’t afraid to zig where others zagged and took a swing.
“Ben was the target all the way along. We’re lucky we got him,” Clark said.

It’s almost like the people who are professional management staff and professional scouting staff might know more than the GM’s on HB!

No chance in hell Stammer will be in TB now.
I wonder if the leafs can do what they are doing with Tanev and give him term.
Both aren’t 35+ contracts. Load both up on SB.
Take advantage of the cap for once. |
