The more I read about him the more depressing this trade is. He fast. That's about it.
We got absolutely, undoubtedly, robbed blind. Can't wait to see Savoie put up 60pts as this dude walks in 3 years.
Adams could run a summer camp on how to get (frank)ed in trades. This was a masterpiece in idiocy. - RhinoFan
You've gone from Savoie has issues with his play style that works in Juniors but won't translate to the NHL to now he's going to be a 60 point player in the NHL?

Two thirds of our team are 4th liners. Our best signing, Zucker, even played 4th line last year. This is truly the worst run team in professional sports, maybe of all time. No contemporary team comes close to Savoie for Ryan (frank)ing McLeod.
Better hope Tage, Tuch, Cozens, Peterka, Dahlin, Power and Quinn all score 40 each. Rest of these schmucks won't break 10. - RhinoFan

We aren't making the playoffs my friend. Scratch that from your mind. We're going to pick top10, we will just skate faster to it this year. - RhinoFan
The Sabres 25 1st would then be another player immediately ranked over Savoie. |

Who trades Matt Savoie for Anthony Cirelli?
- TheSabresTaco
Cirelli has multiple 45pt campaigns and has scored 20g. They aren't even similar and even that trade is meh. |

I don't know this McLeod guy from a hole in the wall but from what I'm reading, a decent 3rd line center with a decent 200ft game... Correct?...
If so, this has Lindy's prints all over it as the Sabres continue to put together one of the most boring teams since the 2024 Islanders.
As far as Savoie... By far their most talented offensive prospect. I think this kid could develop into a Brayden Point type player.
This is scary to watch as a Sabre fan. They've had a paradigm shift in philosophy from accumulate highly talented prospects with a run them out of your building type of game to trap/grind em out kind of wins.
Either way... Edmonton absolutely fleeced a GM who is clearly in over his head. - JYD
Savoie is a Brayden Point type player...?

If he scores 15 more points he's just a better Anthony Cirelli.
yeah I (frank)in said it. - TheSabresTaco
There's always a scenario where this works out long term, but Savoie not being a good #9 is a big part of that.

Right bc it'll be top5 in a stacked draft.
None of these excuses explain the enormous gap in value. Just bc you assembled a bad roster doesn't mean you should also destroy the future. Worst fears have been realized. |

Of course it is. Because if he was Zach Benson, it would be Jiri Kulich or Noah Ostlund headed over there instead.

Taco, I'm thinking the same thing. I honestly can't even begin to imagine how anyone can find even a single positive here. There are none. It's going to be 14. There is no doubt.
None. Not even a miracle could save this lineup. |

The facts are the facts. Adams valued 11 and 14 over Savoie. Otherwise it's probably 11 over Savoie.
The red flag is choosing 11 over Savoie, with +2 years of development. |

I have also been a little dismayed to see the reaction of the Edmonton fans in this trade. They seemed fine with giving up Mcleod.
That said, they also seem to think that they are getting an elite talent back in this trade. They are not. This guy is at best a second line winger, and that assumes he stays healthy. Is he a very good prospect? Absolutely.
Either way, just stop with the "future is destroyed" nonsense. Look at it another way: of all of the guys that were at his level in our system, he is probably the one I would have chosen to give up because of size and position. If we overpaid by a little, so freaking what? And who knows, maybe we didn't overpay at all.

Playing on McDavids wing will have wonderful effect.
And Savoie has questions. Whether or not he's better than a 4th liner isn't one of them. Before anyone makes 3C claims. He was the Oilers 4C going into this year most likely. |

If you like the trade, most of it should be based on viewing Savoie as a heavily degraded prospect.
This sums it up:
"There's nothing that a forward can do in the CHL in their D+2 that's really all that impressive or really justifies "elite prospect" status. "
https://x.com/TopDownHock...tatus/1809409192178180168
However you view him as a prospect, a #9 pick into a 3/4C is a crushing defeat. - Lunaion
If you take a forward top-10, you believe it's possible they make the NHL and do well by D+2.
Matthew Savoie hasn't done that. Many high-end outcomes forecasted for him on draft day have already been disproven.
Great prospect, but IMO his value has decreased since draft day. |

If we are talking about how bad a player sucks.
Savoie played 4 minutes of a playoff game in the AHL was so bad he was benched and sent back to minors.

everyone wants to fleece the other guys. Ok. But anyone who looks under the hood realizes the reason this trade was made, for both sides.
The sabres, for once in their (frank)ing lives, have bet on the right now instead of the future. we should be jumping for joy.

Whether you want to see that or not is up to you. |

You and I are on the same page with a lot of this stuff.
The time to trade prospects that are 1st round picks is before the pick is made.
The second best time to trade them is shortly after the pick is made, but nobody does that.
Almost all first round picks begin to lose value shortly after they are made.
Generally, it's 2nd round and beyond picks that can gain value, but those are rare (think Jagger Firkus). |

This is the same argument as paying a 2nd for a 4th liner like Beck. Well we were going to trade it so we got what we could.
Simply put. If you can't get more for Savoie you NEVER make that move. If you can't get better than Beck for a 2nd, you look elsewhere. If you can't acquire any top6 help, you don't buy out Skinner.
These are all horrid decisions that will be a big part of why this franchise will fold. - RhinoFan
Then you, as a GM would never make a deal as you're like Darcy.. have to blow out every deal.
The world isn't ending, it just isn't what you want.
Adams lost 1 asset he had as of 6/27. His draft was solid again, acquired a Lundell type player, a mini Barkov.. not a 1C but a future productive 3C... And some decent prospects later.
He reconstituted the bottom 6 into a competent NHL group.
The roster isn't fully there yet, but much better than I anticipated. |
