well next year is a much deeper draft and we have 3 1st round picks. Don't you think they could get a #1 dman they like better then? - 2Real
Assuming the team finishes around the same area next year, the team is in the exact same position as this year where they didn't want to meet the asking price to move up.
So say they finish 12th-15th next year, the Flyers have a subpar farm team without a lot of talent and want a franchise center/dman. All 3 of those 1st rnd picks + a roster player is what it's going to take to move up into the top 4. This is also assuming that someone wants to trade out, there are no guarantees.
So say they do that, they do what they refused to do this year and sell out for a potential franchise player, whether it be defense or center.
What then? Does that seem the best use of assets?
Say they take Buium this year, then the potential trade next year nets them their potential franchise center". 2 Cornerstone positions addressed instead of 1. There were no cornerstone positions addressed this year.
Say they don't make the trade again next year and draft more potential mid tier players without addressing the top end are you ok with that?
What they won't do is draft in the top 4/5 intentionally with their own draft pick and use the other picks to draft a 2nd potential stud, if one falls, ala SJ.
The goal posts keep moving with the Flyers. There's no guarantee that after next year's draft the Flyers won't be talking about the 2026 draft as being the most important draft or that they will maximize their draft capital. |

"I still expect - hello it's me 2050[free agency] to be slow," Briere admitted. "It can always change, but I expect it to be slow. Even with buying out Cam [Atkinson]—we had no choice but to buy out Cam just to put us in a decent position. We're not out of the woods with the salary cap, so don't expect much."
had no choice lol.

Actually makes it harder. Remember TK is signed for next year already. They just added more dead space during the first year of TK potential next contract.
This team needs to actually rebuild not just tell us they are doing it. |

Not true, San Jose made that trade on Thursday in the middle of the afternoon, not right before the pick was made. They made their move to get the player they wanted. - TheFreak
My mistake on the timing. In that case, if i was SJ, i wouldn't have traded it either but they had to be comfortable with any one of the top 11 falling, which the Flyers were not.

Telling the fans that they're rebuilding and winning a few more games to contend for the playoffs is apparently the hook for this overall gullible fan base.

It’s not about Luchanko at all. It’s about passing on a potential 1D. I’d be pissed regardless of who they took, Helenius, Luchanko, etc. When you have the opportunity to draft a potential 1D, you take it 100% of the time. Honestly, it’s why passing on Caufield to draft York, while not sexy, was still a logical decision.
To those saying oh well they have 3 firsts in ‘25 and can get their 1D then, that’s unlikely. There are fewer highly rated defenseman at the top of next years draft. This year had an abundance of them. Next years draft is significantly deeper at C. They could have ended Friday night with a potential 1D in their system and the 3 1st rd picks in 25. Then next year they could potentially get a 1C and a 2C.
But here’s the thing, Flahr was quoted as saying those picks could always get moved. Do any of us honestly believe they’ll actually use those picks? It would not surprise me to see the Flyers try to upgrade their roster by trading some of those picks.
There wasn’t a single rumor about a TK trade all week/weekend. Only names that came up were Farabee, Frost, and briefly Laughton earlier with the Ottawa rumor. That tells me TK wasn’t available in any of the move up scenarios and they are definitely going to resign him. That’s not what rebuilding teams do.
I sit here and try to think, is there a team in the NHL worse off than the Flyers right now? Only 2 teams come to mind, Caps and Pens. Both of those teams are delusional and still in win now mode even though they have no shot.
There was so much potential 48 hrs ago. I sit here now dejected at the thought of another regime that doesn’t get it. 4.5 years of failure under Hexy, 4.5 years of failure under Fletch, we are a year into Briere and things are now looking a lot less promising than a year ago. I wonder, are we just now ticking down the clock until mid season 27/28 when the Flyers are aimlessly sitting 6 pts out of a WC spot and Briere is dismissed, and we start another retool? |

Still waiting to find one, just one, scouting report, prospect publication or any experts list of prospects that ranked Luchanko ahead of either Buium or even Helenius.
The Flyers always think they are the smartest guys in the room. How’s that been working out for them the past 12 years? |

The lack of any noise or rumors surrounding a potential trade of Konecny is a great point by you. Tells you all you need to know about that. At least the Pens and the Caps have won a Cup somewhat recently. Versus 50 years ago. That's supposed to happen to those teams eventually.

“The biggest aim in this year's draft was to "secure [the] centerman position a little better," a feat achieved by using three of their first four selections to acquire centers.”
In a draft that everyone said was weaker at the center position than avg, their focus was the center position. Gross negligence. |

Winning teams make the hard decisions. Look at Tampa. While not popular they moved Aergachev and are letting Stamkos go so they can resign Hedman, entertain Guenztle and remain in the upper echelon of competitive teams. Flyers will hang on to middle 6 guys like Laughton, and overpay and tie up money on an aging TK when they should be using/saving that money for younger assets now and assets down the road. |
|
|
|
Yup and that will be the quote in a couple years when Michkov is ready for his extension and the Flyers are still paying TK and Couts close to like $17-18 million. - mikeyo27
That was really the only concern at the time of the Michkov pick. If he does turn out to be the stud we think he is, and wants PAID after his ELC, going to be interesting to see where money comes from. |

By the end of his elc all of the following are off the books:
Peterson
TdAs buyout
Risto
Ellis
Hayes retention
Cam’s buyout
RyJo
Nic D
That’s roughly 29 million. As long as they don’t go full Flyer and sign a bunch of aging UFAs to bloated long term deals they’ll be fine. |

It's a virtual lock that this team will not act smart and focus on obtaining high level elite talent through the draft. They will no doubt, once they gain that cap space. Go back to using trade and free agency to try and build the team. They will never learn their lesson.

Other players like TK, Laughton, Frost, Farabee, Cates, starting goalie whoever that is, and other will eat into that space as they will need new deals.
Now they all won’t be here though you get the point. |

Yeah, probably.
At this point, I’m just apathetic. They aren’t worth worrying about anymore. |

I don't think it makes it harder. Peterson and TDA come off the books. Plus, the salary cap is supposed to go up a large amount next year. |

The problem with teams like Tampa is that yes they go after superstars. But because of that they average supporting casts. Look at Toronto, they will have over 50% of the salary cap tied up in 4 players and if they extend marner they will continue to have half the salary Cap go to 4 players. |

2024 Under the Microscope article

Briere claimed Phladelphia even toyed with the trading up from the 12th overall pick (prior to the deal with Minnesota) with Luchanko being one of the main targets.
That would've been a bold move to give up multiple picks for Jett. I am guessing that Minnesota assured Briere that they were more interested in a projected top pairing defenseman than a projected middle/bottom 6 forward.

I would hope Briere has learned there is no way drafting a player in the top 5 other then scuttling a season. No amount of draft picks and players is going to motivate GMs to move outside the top 5. Briere has now seen this first hand 2 times. I like the idea of 3 1st rd picks next season, but if the Flyers are even picking @ 7, highly doubtful he can move into the top four in a top heavy center draft. |
