It just seems wild that there is seemingly no way to compromise here.

Also when cap goes up by like 5% in a season, should everyones contract also go up 5%? If it goes down 5% from season to season should everyones contract go down 5%? I just think it's an extremely flawed system.

Non-traditional markets are driving that a little I believe.

Imo the one thing that is half assed regarding contracts is the tax free places where you can give a guy less money and it would be the same as in NY or tax crazy states. Ain’t fair man.

By working in NYC ( where MSG is located ) players must pay just over 14.75% income tax combined --- thats NY State and NYC tax. This does not include the Federal income tax that everyone must pay.

So if the Rangers and Nashville both offered Stamkos the same $8mill/yr salary, Stamkos' take home pay is over $1.1 mill/year greater by choosing Nashville!

This is crazy! This REALLY needs to be addressed in the next CBA...

Players are paid based on where each game is. So while it's true that players in the income tax-free states get paid more on a net basis, it isn't as drastic as some make it seem. Half the games are played at home and would receive tax benefits. A player on Florida playing a game at MSG is still paying NY taxes on that portion of his check

Using Stamkos’ NSH salary as an example, $550k/year is still a lot of money. It impacts the decisions of higher paid players more than it impacts the decisions of lower paid players.

I think there was always be inequalities though. Canadian dollar vs US dollar. Big markets with lots of media/endorsement opportunities vs small markets. All of these things weight into player decisions. I'm not sure how you would go about creating a completely level playing field.

You just have a variable cap based on home state factors. And for usd vs car, very easy to hedge.
