I definitely think he's past his prime, just trying to be objective in where I criticize him or not.
I don't think he "had to" keep Engvall or Mayfield in the fold. Especially not Engvall. Mayfield, even though I'd vehemently disagree with the concept, I can at least understand because he's been an Isles lifer. But both players were/are entirely replaceable and there was no need to dole out a collective 14 years of contracts for them. - eichiefs9
Can’t argue with that. Definitely didn’t need to sign them each for 7 years.
Mayfield is an odd one as he was showing promise and carved out a niche for himself. Right after the contract he became a debit.
They can over the cap by 8 million at this time. I get that it ties their hands and makes trading someone even more difficult. Who knows, they may have already signed Holmstrom too. Sprong is probably the only UFA that would make any sense at all for this team. I still think someone, probably JGP is on his way out. Lou is probably just finding the cheapest way to do it. Not going to get any type of return.
On another note, I read an article saying Toronto wants to take the "C" away from JT. How funny would that be???

Leaders don’t string their team along and then jump ship. That’s not Islander bias that’s just pointing out a weak man….aka not a leader.
The biggest stain on Tavares is that I believe he’s the only player to hit 1000 pts to never see the third round.

I think this team is going to see a lot of turnover between the trade deadline and the end of next summer.
Palmieri's deal is up, don't think he'll be back. I think Cizikas could be gone next summer as well, he has no trade protection. Nelson's deal is up too and Dobson/Romanov will need new contracts which will not be cheap. Pageau will have to be offloaded one way or another to make room also.
I don't know what will happen with Nelson, honestly. His next contract won't start until he's 34 years old and that's a tough age to give someone a long-term deal. They're batshit crazy if they don't move him at the deadline unless they're safely in a playoff spot at that point.

One way or the other, something has to give by the trade deadline and next offseason. Ownership better be prepared to make tough choices. This team cannot continue to limp along like this.

I don't see them trading Nelson if they're in a playoff spot, whether that's the right decision or not. But if they're clearly outside the playoff picture then they would be off the reservation to not move him. If they're dead-set on giving him another contract he can always come back in the summer. It's not like he'd be getting an 8 year max deal anyway so losing the opportunity for the extra year shouldn't be a factor for him or the team.

If the Islanders are struggling to make the playoffs, why would Nelson not want out to try to win? Nelson should be looking for a chance at the Cup at this stage.

Who knows maybe the guy wants to stay on Long Island with his family? Either way he should be traded.

One of the issues is the three point games always make it look closer that it is. They make it so difficult to catch the teams ahead. You pretty much need a team to choke to get past them.

If the isles are struggling to make the playoffs I think you’ll see major changes which would include Nelson being dealt.
CHL import draft is going on today. Nothing super noteworthy here, but one of last year's picks was selected by London which would be an excellent program to develop with.

London takes Islanders 2023 selection Jesse Nurmi. He’s signed with NYI, so have to like his odds of being loaned. High energy winger who should be a versatile player for Dale Hunter.

The London Knights have selected signed #Isles prospect Jesse Nurmi with the No. 58 pick in the CHL Import Draft. A year in the OHL is a better fit for him than jumping to Bridgeport in the AHL right away.

Hopefully Jesse works out along with Danny Nelson.

I wish JT nothing but NO success. Do not feel bad for him one bit. He made his bed and now he can sleep in it. The other side of that is he could give two sh!ts what I think as he counts his money all the way to the bank.

Depending on the direction of the team, it could happen as early as Thanksgiving. Do I think this team, constructed as it is now, is a cup contender? NO. Do I think this team can complete for a playoff spot. Yes.
I like the moves that have been made so far. Clearly the team needs to make several more moves to clear cap to have the ability of a 23-man roster. I know guys have been talking about Sprong. I watched some highlights, he has some speed, not afraid to go to the dirty areas, can provide secondary scoring. His last contract was 2 mil.
What do you think it would cost Isles to sign him?
He could replace JGP and only cost half as much. Put CC back in middle of third line.
They have Isles picking 12th next year. Seems they do not have much faith in this team either. - Nfdbulldawg
Happy 4th Nf and to all the Islander fans!
It's too soon for predictions. If this is the roster, there is risk due to age and injury. Especially to players like Palms and Pelech. Lot of pressure on the defense and Sorokin to rebound as well.

I think the Islanders will have a similar season in terms of competing for a playoff spot. With Barzal, Bo, Dobson, and Sorokin, I'm not expecting a huge drop-off. There is no guarantee though and especially with the teams around the Islanders like the Devils and Caps improving.
I would hold off making any signings right now. I want to give a full shot to someone like Ruslan. Maybe Maggio or Dufour show something mid-season?
