#1, geopolitics wasn't the only reason MM dropped to #7. He was very undersized and his skating was suspect. Teams are back to placing a premium on size at the draft. Most of the big guys are just as skilled/mobile as small guys now.

#2, if JD can't stay healthy Brad Shaw won't matter. Nothing else will matter. If he doesn't play he can't improve.

#3, Cutter was ranked #5 in McKenzie's final rankings, which are based on input from NHL scout/executives. Flahr didn't do anything unusual by taking Cutter at #5.

- Tomahawk

If Michkov was playing in NA already and not the KHL, he might have even gone ahead of Bedard in the draft. Secondly, of course JD has to stay healthy in order to develop, and I think he will. And finally, I do not recall what the draft rankings were in that draft but I do know many were surprised the Flyers picked Quitter there.

None of you on this forum even heard of JOB before his name got called in the draft, and thus none of you have a right to comment about the player.

Zakreski lol. Must be a good Polish kid.

"Though Zakreski flashes exciting skill at times, his impact is most consistent in pursuit. He’s a hard-working forechecker capable of leveraging his physicality into quick offence in the slot. The motor stays running on the backcheck and inside the defensive zone"

My question is, why ask him to come to Dev camp? Based on such a description, why not just give him that ELC right then? Those are rare traits, those are Flyers traits.

Well, all I can say is I watched JOB grow up around these parts and he was a damned good hockey player that was going to picked in the 1st round of that draft, if not by the Hextall and the Flyers then by another team. It was a gamble for sure and it didn't work out for Hextall, but I think it was a worthy gamble. Its not anyones fault that the kid got hurt multiple times which curtailed not only his development, but his ability also. None of you on this forum even heard of JOB before his name got called in the draft, and thus none of you have a right to comment about the player.

Its always a gamble drafting someone that hasnt played good competition, and ronnie bit on it. Dont think he was projected to go first round, ronnie changed that

I worry about more than just his health. I havent seen anything special. But some guys shine brighter when they have more talent around them. Hoping thats his case
- bradster

Personally I agree but probably for different reasons. I think he has been playing injured the whole time and we haven't seen his full potential. I just worry the injuries are always going to prevent him from reaching that full potential. I hope I am wrong.

Bedard opened up a massive performance gap to the rest of the field that year. He could have been from North Korea and he would have still gone 1OA.

Secondly, of course JD has to stay healthy in order to develop, and I think he will.

Guess that makes you an optimist then.

Nobody was surprised.

A lot of folks were just upset that they passed on Jiricek.

MM was a gamble which is why he fell to the Flyers at 7 in the first place. No one doubted his talent but many teams were scared off by the geopolitical situation and whether they could get him to the NHL. With JD, give him a chance, he is only 22 years old. He will get stronger and work with Brad Shaw who will bring out the most in him. Drysdale will be a strong player for the Flyers. Will he be better than Quitter? We'll find out in a couple of years. Flahr has done a good job picking in the 1st round of the draft, that is just a fact. York, Foerster, Quitter (recall people were surprised he was picked this high), Michkov, Bonk and Luchenko. Not a bad crop of players.
- jd250

- he was the BPA at the time. sorry not a gamble at all to me. very simple.

- who says JD will only get stronger? that is total BS. he may may not.

- you have changed your tune with flahr which is no surprise. that is fact. Well 4 of those you mention are still TBD no? other 2 time will tell.

- not a bad crop f players that pretty much evry other nhl team has in spades. keep pumping those tires

Flyers always invite kids on their draft list that they didn't pick. So not surprised he's full of Flyers intangibles.

McKenzie's last draft ranking had JOB at #34 - Flyers picked him at 19.

I forget. Was that the draft where we were screaming for them to take DeBrincat in the 2nd. If so woof.

Flyers just need to start polling the board here for their first/second round picks. Our track record has been miles better than theirs the last 10 years.

I don't think so... if not mistaken DeBrincat was 2016 or 17.
