Interesting article from a former HB blogger who happens to be a tax accountant based in Alberta.

He breaks down the so-called tax disparities in the NHL.

I think most people who complain about taxes really just struggle with filling out forms.

It's a good piece ..doesn't go into as much detail as some others but his initial tagline about the "tax issue" seems like clickbait to me. He starts with the idea that the tax issue is a farce but then goes on to say that the tax difference is real.

The major issue he's greying over is that the tax balance used by athletes (that gets it closer but not the same) is the RCA. The RCA is a simply income deferral ...you get paid later, sometimes much later, if and when, you live in a better tax residency.

What about players that want to stay in Canada when they retire?
What about the fact that $10M after tax dollars in my hand as a 27 yr old is better than $10M after tax dollars spread out over my 40's, 50's and 60's.
Also - RCA's are prohibited by some pro sports (eg. NBA) and the high wealth accounting community is concerned that the NHL could follow suit. JT is trying his best to rip apart high wealth tax advantages.

As he says the tax advantage is real. But I agree with him it's only one reason that a player would chose to play in location A vs. B. Is the difference 17-20% like some say ..no. But it's significant and an obvious variable for many athletes.

I've never had a big problem with it b/c there are so many variables ...some of which favour Canada. But as the Cap/salaries grow this issue is/will become more influential.

Here's a good Allan Walsh video. He interviews a guy from Octogon who does nothing but file athletes taxes. He starts with the same clickbait about taxes being a non issue but then they go on to talk about how their is a disparity. Lots of good insight if taxes are your thing. He even says it'd be fairer to have a net tax Cap in the CBA.

I'm terrible with math and I zoned out about halfway through the article when the numbers starting kicking in.

One valid point that he did touch on was the complexity of any proposed fix in the CBA. Tax regulations vary widely from place to place and circumstance to circumstance. Fixing it in a fair and workable way seems like a steep hill to climb for organizations as big as the NHL and NHLPA.

I think what us working class schmucks have a hard time processing is just how much money these guys make and how that changes things in your life. For broke-dik motherfukkas like me, every penny counts, so any perceived tax advantage is something we will zero in on. For a gazillionaire athlete who has already earned $50m to $100m, those taxes might be important, but not as important to them as they are to us - especially since the change in their couch cushions would be a life-changing amount of money to some of us.

poop, I bet some hockey players pay more for their country club memberships than I make in a year.

I’ve always found that the rich are grateful for all the bounty they’ve received and are happy to pay back in the form of their fair share of taxes. That’s why they would never support psychopathic political candidates whose only redeeming characteristic is the promise of even lower taxes for the rich.
