Let’s take the trade that happened , not a fictional trade.
Sabres tried hard to get a 3c trade at the draft
Sabres tried hard to get a 3c via free agency
Sabres still needed a 3c
The demand was still there, the supply was less
The price was higher
Sabres overpaid based on needing a 3c for next season - Boss34
With all due respect, this is terrible logic. They had been trying to get a 3C for weeks, including at the draft. Eventually the prices became known, and they pulled the trigger. Anything beyond that is pure speculation. For all we know, they got exactly the guy that they wanted for a price they were comfortable paying.
Again, if there was a tax, it would be identified by the seller. Why would someone try to assign a tax and hurt their own chances of making a trade?

I was trying to think of what the best example of what a "trade tax" might be, and I think I thought of one: Tim Murray, Chiarelli, etc. When other GMs know that your GM is a buffoon, they are going to try to rake you over the coals. I can almost picture the Kings GM giggling as he asks for even more assets in the Hudson Fasching trade. that takes real sack to keep asking for 2nd round picks in addition to the players. |

If Malenstyn has the same length/impact of a career as DLo, are we happy with spending a 2nd? 700 games in the NHL (that kind of blows my mind) |

Why would they bring Lindy Ruff back? The guy has been an abject failure his entire career. |

Guess it depends on what Cole Hutson turns into, sure would have liked Cernak with one of those 2nds |

Oh, I don't know... maybe the 5th most wins of any coach all-time (Maurice just passed him). And speaking of Maurice, Ruff has a better career win percentage than him. But I am sure you said the same thing about Maurice, right? |

For a second? Absolutely. And it amazing how long Deslauries has hung around. He was never much of a player, but he is as gritty as they come.

I believe that when you go after players that a team is activity trying to trade then they take the best offer. When you go after players that teams are not looking to part with, they typically want more than fair value. I don't believe Washington was looking to trade Beck (his cap hit wasn't going to be an issue) and the same with McLeod (I believe Edmon still needs to move money out). I don't believe its a Buffalo tax (although it maybe easier extract more out of Adams than the average GM when wants one of your players). |

I ripped him because he deserved it. I also stated many times, I was waiting for the week to close out. And he's still not done in my opinion.
But the whining is absolutely out of control here, considering the areas he actually addressed.
If we're going to continue to whine about the lack of a top 6 trade, fine. He didn't do his job as of this minute.
But the job he did do up to this point to address real needs was actually decent. - TheSabresTaco
That's all fair.
I remain mystified by the Malenstyn trade.
Having it leak out that Appert shared they were scared of him in the AHL is astoundingly humorous. |

Agree 100%. It was a desperation move. That being said, what was best for the franchise isn't always going to be the best for a GM on the hot seat. That's all.
We can be happy we brought in a player of need, not about the cost of doing so. That is a glaringly bad trade. We need to hope Savoie completely busts out in order to win this one IMO. - QuinnFan
If the Sabres make the playoffs each of the next 2 seasons and McLeod plays a part in that, respectfully, who gives a (frank) if Savoie is a 20 goal, 50 point player in Edmonton...? |

wahlberg is one of those 'identity' guys that had his value inflated by the Panthers winning the cup. Like a Sam Bennett or Alex Killorn.

Talking about Ruff and putting the pieces together and forming that identity. Hopefully it doesn't take long for that to come together on the ice. |
