all those players listed are wingers. Don't the Leafs need some Center men?
- dmnted

Both if Holmberg or Kampf or Minten don't take #3C.

I would take Alex Nylander for sure. Brothers can motivate each other.

W. Nylander, Matthews, Domi
A. Nylander, Tavares, Marner

If you gotta bargain bin for the run it back with Marner plan, why the fuk not. Amirite?

Rebuilding?

We’re talking about adding a 3C

Hence the list

- mr.sir

And how do they get the cap space? Someone needs to be moved to make any other notable signing work.

Phew. That's a lot of defense for one Mitch Marner to play on that line.

at a reduce cost of retained 50% for 7th or for futures
- dmnted

I trust Kent Hughes can turn this into magic again.

We weren't getting a first for Chiarot.
No one was gonna give us a first for Monahan.
Dvorak is worth nothing.

The trend is real.

And for what it's worth, when he's healthy, Dvorak is a fine third line centre. He's very forgettable but won't put you in trouble, wins faceoffs and is big despite not being overly physical.

That last one isn't worth much but... people love "big" so....

Here we go again. Fill the empty spots with kids and plugs and this time it will all be different……because after all it was the coaches fault and that’s why we gave him an extension last fall for another 2yrs at 3mil a year!!!

I would be inclined to take a chance on Nylander. Worst case scenario you waive him and he's a Marlie or gets claimed and moves on to his next team.

That said, we have offensive weapons. Really the Leafs should be looking for character, strength, size, battle and some intensity. I mean Sprong is interesting because he does a lot with very little ice time. Stephen Lorentz is interesting - he's 6'3 and a fast skater, but I think he's a lot of motion and very little substance. He does hit, though.

Guys like Kubalik, Hoffman and Pearson are all in decline or not projecting well. Kubalik is only 28 but that guy has the competitive fire of a glass of water.

Former exceptional status wash out Sean Day is available. He's 6'3 and 240lbs and full of the type of failed promise I've become accustomed to from my team's athletes.

The UFA pool is dry.

- Monkeypunk

For elucidation on Sean Day and his exceptional status. His wasn't one of dominant talent. He was simply too big to play against U16 at 15. He was 6'1 215lbs. AND Mississauga pressured the CHL to grant it as an effort to recruit him from his path to the NCAA.

I got duped back in the day in his second year in the OHL making excuses for his bad decisions and the way he really couldn't read the play. Turns out it wasn't just growth, that's just his game.

Washington is way over the cap. Get Strome and have them retain $800k. It's the draft-fecta. We have Marner who was #4, get Strome who was #3, then go get Eichel who was #2 - and then McDavid will feel that he should just come here.
- Monkeypunk

they do have a new GM in place

Right now they have about $86m allocated - this assumes they move Timmins and keep Hakanpaa on the roster. If they move Hakanpaa to LTIR and keep Timmins, they are up about $400k. If they move Liljegren and keep Timmins (which I'd do, but I'm not on that management team), they'd free up $1.9m more.

They do still have to sign a forward - so let's say it's Dewar @ $1.3m. It's an overpayment, but he'll get it in arbitration. They have $1.2m - $1.6m in space after this. If they move out Kampf they'd have $4m or so to bring in a 3rd line centre. If they moved out Liljegren they'd have $4.3m.

There are options available but it depends on the flexibility of the trade market.

Yeah it’s nice.

Somehow it’s still a hidden gem. Pukaskwa NP, Ouimet Canyon, Sleeping Giant are all unreal. Very Canadiana too. Group of 7ish.

Moving Kampf will cost them. He has a modified NTC and he’s a flat out overpaid fourth liner. And firing out picks and prospects isn’t really an option for them.

The game can be played, but I’m not expecting it.

Not necessarily. Plenty of players with the same or more salary got moved for "future considerations". Just a matter of finding a team with cap space that he doesn't have on his list, which is pretty small because it's only 10 teams.

Same with Jarnkrok. 10 teams only.

The Kampf signing was a bit of a headscratcher at the time but the reality is that they're probably not finding someone better for cheaper if they do move him.

They have to play at something. Kampf is overpaid but not so egregiously that you couldn't give him away (i.e. traded for future considerations). He is a pro and exceptionally fit, so I think there would be interest from a number of teams. The bottom line does go back to something I'd said earlier though which is that I don't think he's so overpaid that you can replace his value within that limited sphere.

One guy I can think of in a trade that might fit the bill is Bjugstad out of Utah. He's decent, he can score and is actually a pretty solid two-way 3rd line centre. He makes $300k less than Kampf, but is 2 years older. Bjugstad has scored over 20 twice, had 19 - and David Kampf once scored 11. He's also 6'6 and 210 and a UFA at the end of the year with no trade protection. Hell if they traded Timmins back to Utah for Bjugstad right now they might go for it - although I guess that depends on if Utah feels Lamoureux is ready or not. My guess is that they'll want him to start in the AHL this year anyway.

only thing is that Dvorak spends more time on the IR then he plays as I recall.
Hard Pass pour moi
Leafs need a Bennett type ish C man
soon, Tavares can be the 3rd line C man

I personally think Tavares's future is as a winger. Just like hot Stamkos converted because of his lack of foot speed.

But for next season, he can still obviously work as the Leafs #2 centre imho.

Interesting….

Idk, Alex I think is starting to break out. Willy peaked in a contract year and will probably finish somewhere in the mid 70 pt range. Especially since Berube is not his style of coach.

Everyone who ever played with Mitch had career years.
