I just went to capfriendly to see how this impacts the Isles cap space, only to learn that the site has closed.

That site looks like they just scraped the existing data from CapFriendly and basically copied their page layout. I have my doubts that it'll be updated accurately/timely.

Puckpedia.com seems like it's going to be the heir-apparent to CapFriendly. They have dollar totals for Holmstrom/Pulkkinen deals already, where capwages does not.

Isles are basically at the cap ceiling. Wonder what happens to Martin and Clutterbuck. I don’t believe they’ve signed anywhere. I could see Clutterbuck still playing somewhere, but I bet Martin gets a job with the franchise.

Seems to be a theme with Islander prospects. They do not seem to be aggressive enough and take advantage of any opportunities.

Isles are basically at the cap ceiling. Wonder what happens to Martin and Clutterbuck. I don’t believe they’ve signed anywhere. I could see Clutterbuck still playing somewhere, but I bet Martin gets a job with the franchise.

At this point I think it's safe to assume neither will be back. They can exceed the cap by 10% in the summer if they do decide to bring Cal back at league minimum.

But I don't think Martin is an NHL'er anymore at this point nor should he have any place on this team. Love the guy and he's carved out his small spot in Isles history but he's more of a burden than an asset at this point.

What they could do is trade for a player who is on perma-LTIR to allow them to exceed the cap, but not sure they want to go that route. Funny that I saw your post immediately after reading this article

I would guess not him, he's got the upcoming season plus two more on a relatively expensive deal. I'd imagine, if they did decide to go that route, that they'd want someone with only one year left on their deal.

Interesting. I wonder why a player on LTIR is trade eligible, but an injured player isn’t I believe. Isn’t that why players who are about to be dealt are sat?

I think that's really more geared towards keeping the player healthy so the deal gets completed. If you're getting close to finalizing an agreement for a trade the last thing you want to do is have that player get injured and then all the sudden the other GM goes "yea thanks but no thanks, no more deal".

I believe what you're thinking of is that a player can't be bought out while (or because) they're injured. It seems that's what happened with Krug, STL was going to buy him out but it turned out he was dealing with this condition so then they couldn't.

I think where the wires cross in my brain is the insurance aspect. I always felt like the player was sat, because the new team trading wouldn’t be able to insure said player if inured. I’m not 100% on that but it’s what makes sense to me🤷🏻‍♂️

Either way, it's just to mitigate the risk of damaging an asset. Not sure if the insurance policy would cover the contract itself and/or be transferrable from one team to another or not.

I like the Holmstrom signing. It’s a make it or break it contract. I also loved Roy’s assessment of Holmstrom’s game.
What’s gonna happen with Wally? I mean this is the guy who would have bought us the cup if he played with Barzal in the PO’s. If they only let the youngsters play!

The sudden departure of Evgeny Kuznetsov last week to Russia could leave the Carolina Hurricanes scrambling to fill their second-line center position for 2024-25. They could employ Jesperi Kotkaniemi in that role, slide winger Martin Necas into that spot, or move up Jack Drury or Jordan Staal into that job.

If those four aren't up to the task, the Hurricanes could be in the market for a center by the trade deadline. Brock Nelson could be available if the New York Islanders are out of contention and become sellers.

Nelson, 32, fills the second-line center position for the Islanders. The 32-year-old is in the final season of his contract with a cap hit of $6 million and a 16-team no-trade list. He could be a perfect fit for the Hurricanes if they're not on his no-trade list.

The Hurricanes have $13.9 million in cap space right now but that will shrink once they re-sign restricted free agents Necas, Drury, and Seth Jarvis. Assuming they don't make a significant addition throughout the season, they'd have enough room for Nelson's cap hit. They could draw on their prospect depth to pitch an intriguing offer to the Isles.
