They have no centers. The defense is average at best. Who knows about the goaltending. Konecny is a luxury they do not need with Michkov here. This is not how you build winning teams.
Are we rooting for these guys to have cushy jobs or are we rooting for a goddamn Stanley Cup? - hereticpride
Who's the "we?"* The Flyers are a business and the guys who are running it are rooting for the best way to make money.
Rebuilds are risky financially. They need revenue in that middle of nowhere island in south Philly. They need people to come there and buy stuff for the next 5 years. They have a lock now to have say 95% attendance over the next 5 years on auto-pilot.
What would you do if you were the CEO? Go on a risky limb and start rebuilding while MM gets frustrated with repeated losses and fans female dog and Sixers get approval to leave and Phillies move away from partnership and the entire Xfinity complex starts to get an aura of gloom about it?
I am not trying to be cynical. I am just saying that I don't particularly blame them at all.

I think his point is that they don't really give a (frank) about the Cup... but they'll give off a whiff that they do, and keep fan favorites around, and dredge up the Bullies to keep the fans placated and the bean counters swooning. - Tomahawk
Bullies built this franchise up and proceeded to absolutely destroy it with Comcast. |

Couterier (8 years)
Sanheim (8 years)
Tippet (8 years)
Konecny (8 years)
Flyers are currently have 4 8-year contracts on the team and Briere signed 3 of them. That's incredible for the shape the team is in.
The GM who replaces the GM who replaces Briere is going to have a lot of work to do in the 2030s. - Flyers_01
The GM that replaces him doesn’t have a hope in hell if they are held back from bottoming out like many NHL franchises do.
I don’t have a hope in hell a general manager of this team would get a green light to sell off actual likeable pieces, and go for a top 5 pick for a few years.
The loud alumni scum would be up in arms, the trailer park portion of the fanbase would howl, and Comcast wouldn’t want to face that heat.
As always, Flyers going to Flyer. Losers, the lot of them. |

Gotta keep this culture of winning and excellence together at all costs.
Meanwhile a loser franchise like Tampa is making ruthless decisions on fan faves. Bunch of dummies. - Tomahawk
Hopefully Torts will stay. Or the
culture he brought has to be rebuilt. 😉 |

This is the part I don't get. Why are they clowns? They are running a business, and they have been given a chance to make a lot of money over the next few years. At a senstitive, fragile time in their business.
That makes them clowns for taking up the chance? - PT21
Briere isn't running a business. What he is doing is running this team into the ground further. If they are a schitt team at some point dope fans will stay away no? They aint gonna make any more money they already make on the current path. The course they are on would lead to more losses then monetary gains.
The hockey people are incompetent. simple as that. They have the resources needed. Do you have direct proof comcast is telling no rebuild we need to make money every year then if so post it. Flyers are small wheel in the Comcast cog. They can easily, very easily handle a few years of "losing" money. The smart business people at comcast surely know this don't you think?
What is at the heart of the matter is the flyers will not under any circumstance at the present time tear it down. They want in their mind to be "competitve". It is not a we need to make money issue to me at all. |

It’s actually a fair deal for the player. Just not what this organization needed unfortunately. |

Not only that, anyone dreaming of the Flyers getting into the top 10 is probably gone. There's no way the Flyers aren't aiming for the playoffs this year and we will hear once again how the noble Flyers tried valiantly and in vain to trade up to draft elite talent but thankfully there was a 200 ft project player available to soften the blow. - Flyers_01
They will still be a bottom 10 team in the league. |

If that’s how Comcast truly operates then we all need to get the (frank) out of dodge. Because they certainly don’t care about anything more than maintaining mediocrity.
Bill, before you issue your Comcast approved puff piece on this deal I just urge you to consider what bone headed moves like these have done time and time again to your beloved franchise. When does someone higher up have to own up it??? |

Comcast imo does not get involved at all. They give the team the budget and the resources. They leave it up to the hockey people. Of which they hired !!!

He has been underpaid but it is what it is now. Too much money and too much term. He is not a Reinhart talent… Danny is really reminding me of the previous GM who shall not be named. |

You are correct. They don’t get involved. At all.
They are scared of upsetting the Bully faithful portion of the fanbase, scared of upsetting the loudmouth alumni, and long employed members of the organization.
So we have what we have. An incompetent country club with zero true accountability or new ideas of how to build a contender.
But good thing we will be borderline competitive. Have that culture restored. Few more alumni nights, and jobs for former Flyers. |

Any owner is gonna set parameters and expectations. And major moves (like TK's extension) do require the GM to seek approval.
Comcast probably will never give the hockey people the green light to tank. Hexy was denied that option. And based on how Briere talked when he first arrived, it doesn't seem like it was on the table for him either. |

1. They had 94% capacity last year. I will make a bet with you right now this will go up and more importantly stay up.
2. The (in)direct proof is adding up the 2 and 2s over the years. And there have been many such 2+2s. Over so many years, there have been different GM's, different players, different CEOS. The team has never committed to a real rebuild, from even before the salary cap. If it was clear that going that route and marrying hockey success with financial success was a feasible path, it would have happened by now.
3, Brian Roberts doesn't run this franchise, Hilferty does. Individual McDnonald franchises are also "small wheel" in the McDonald empire. But McDonald incentivizes the smallest of them to make money each year.
The current formula (old guard, pride, Torts, etc) is allowed to persist by guys like Dave Scott and Hilferty, who are used to ruthlessly changing course in corporate matters if necessary for 1 reason alone: that formula works here, and it makes money. |
