Well I guess the problem would be that you don't stop at 6
- TheMussel

I'd say #7. Higher life sounds like #6 only a bit higher

Not sure yet all the particulars, but sounds like Yaroslav Askarov is being traded from Nashville to San Jose

wonder what's going back the other way?
will this be like the Pittsburg/Winnipeg trade 1:1?
this old grasshopper needs to be patient and wait to see what shakes other than my hands.

The #SJSharks have acquired Yaroslav Askarov, a 2025 third-round pick and Nolan Burke from the #preds for a 2025 first-round pick, David Edstrom and Magnus Chrona.

Let's be honest: Ty Voit is Jeremy Bracco 2.0.

The 3rd is Colorado's pick and the 1st is Vegas'; if the Vegas 1st is in the top-10, San Jose has the choice to trade their 1st or Vegas' pick.

I suppose Nashville views it as getting Edstrom (a 1st already), a pick in the top-20 and a pick in the top 120 - which effectively surpasses the value of Askarov.

Danny Jansen about to make history as the first player to play for both teams in the same game. He’ll also catch for the at bat that he started and must be pinch hit for. (He was at bat when the game was called for rain.)

I don't think Voit makes it due to his sleight frame, but I think Voit is better than Bracco was in terms of creativity and skating. I had the impression that Bracco just didn't want to put in the work - sort of like Wellwood.

man the SJS 1st must belong to Vegas that they shipped out as there is NO top 10 protection attached to the deal.

It's a conditional in that if the Vegas pick is in the top 10, San Jose has the right to swap their pick with Vegas'. If both San Jose and Vegas fall on their faces, Nashville ends up with a great pick. Realistically Vegas' pick is probably around 16-18th.

Vegas has seen the departures of Carrier, Marchessault, Mantha, Stephenson and Logan Thompson while only adding back Holtz, Olofsson and Samsonov.

They are still over the cap (before putting Lehner on LTIR - so not really) and aging. It's still a solid roster with Eichel, Stone, Barbashev, Hertl and Karlsson up front and Pietrangelo, Theodore and Hanifin on the backend.

Ultimately they've lost more goals scored than they've brought in and they've weakened their goaltending.

The west is a little lopsided - like Calgary, Seattle, Minnesota and St. Louis are the closest to contending for a playoff spot and they all seem so far from Vegas - who finished in the last wild card spot last year - I just can't see them failing to make it again, though.

For that kind of a price (Robertson+?), the Leafs should have been involved. Would have been a much better situation going into this year and beyond with another top notch prospect in the crease.

San Jose is a horrible team so Askarov is probably going to get shelled this year but long term, that's a great trade for San Jose.

I'm sure they kicked the tires, but they don't have a 2025 1st to battle with, their 2026 1st is still probably considered a lower 1st than Vegas' given their recent standings positions and roster projections over the next couple of years.

I think Robertson is okay but he's just not in the same sphere as a prospect as Edstrom. We'd be in Cowan territory there to compete.

To match that deal, it's probably something you don't mind - like Cowan + 2026 1st + Hildeby.

I like Askarov and I'd probably have been good with Cowan + _something_ to take that swing, but it's a hard thing to rely on a completely unproven guy when you're where the Leafs are - even though he has a very high ceiling and may be a franchise goalie, he's just not yet - so it's a massive, massive risk.

I'd sincerely imagine it's why a lot of teams considered "in the mix" balked at it.

I see it as a much more reasonable risk, not a massive one with a pay-off that could be exactly what cures this team of what is missing. I don't see it as any bigger a risk than going with Woll + Stolarz and expecting to win in the playoffs.

The Leafs have minimal cap space and their ability to fix the defense quickly and cheaply is very limited via UFA / trades.

If they, for example, traded Nylander for Askarov, yes, that's a massive risk. You're giving up a guaranteed, known commodity for a prospect.

But if the Leafs are giving up other unknown prospects who have their own faults and downsides, I just see it as a necessary risk at this stage of the game.

But, if they were to suddenly find an elite franchise goalie, well maybe an average blueline with many weapons up front suddenly works a lot better (like it did with Pittsburgh just to name one example).

Well, at least he will be reforged in the San Jose fires of mediocrity. The league will find out pretty quick if the dude lives up to the hype. He's gonna get bombarded with shots.

BTW, who was the big Starblazers fan in the last thread? I'm a total space battleship Yamato geek.

Me. I loved that show so much when I was a kid. Being about 9-11 years old and watching a show where relatively main characters _died_ was astonishing and shocking.
