This all reads as why a lot of people around here wanted Tulsky to be GM of Pens and Dubas be Prez

Deferred 15m. Only affected the cap 1/2 a mil but it’s still smart for soon the be retiring players. Imagine tulsky was hired instead of hextall and did this to Letang and Geno. Adds up.

Idk, I don't get the point of this really. Deferring $15m to the end of an 8-year contract devalues it by about $3M due to inflation, hence his lowered cap hit AAV does actually align with the expected 2024-dollar value of his contract.

This just seems like a cheap-owner trick. The easier way to reduce the cap hit is to front-load the salary, since the effective dollar value to the player is highest if you pay him all now, which is what has always been done for high-profile players.

If I'm a top player, why would I want to defer the money? I'd rather sign at a lower AAV after you pay me more upfront.
