Neely putting the pressure on Swayman today. Mentions 64 million, so 8x8. Swayman better sign soon or the fanbase isn't going to be happy.

8x8 is a pretty sweet deal for a tender who's never shouldered the burden of starting for a full season.

Will be Swayman I'm unhappy with if he refuses a deal like that.

I agree and I also feel like this was the way to get the public back on the side of the Bruins. Not sure if it was the best move, but this stalemate has to end.

Getting ugly either way. I think Neely was an extension of all of us today. If Swayman won’t take 8. Wonder if we are actually getting into trade territory.

Ducks for Zegras and Dostal?
Utah for either goalie and a roster player. Schmaltz?
Send him to Montreal and re-ignite the rivalry?
Obvious I hope to keep him.

I hope that 1st rounder Sweeney got for Ulmark was worth the headache...

Now Sway's agent is saying no such offer was tendered. What a load of crap this whole situation is. bumholes on both sides.

I highly, highly doubt that Neely would've made that comment if they hadn't offered 64 million. The agent is just doing damage control. If 64 million is a number Swayman would be happy with, why wouldn't the agent just publically accept the 64 million instead of trying to refute it?

Sweeney: How can we make the acquisition of Korpisalo look better?

Neely: Lets make Swayman look like a bad by sarcastically insinuating he is a greedy douchebag.

Sweeney: And we will officially announce Korpisalo as the starter opening night to emphasize the point!

Neely: I like it, lets hold a press conference so all of the fans will see it.

I would not be surprised to see a trade request come from this. I know frustration is mounting but what Neely just did was completely unprofessional.

Yep. So all that bluster was just meant to make Swayman look bad. Going to be fun to see how the rest of this plays out.

I don't believe Swayman's agent for one second in this regard. Not necessarily disagreeing with your assessment of Neely/Sweeney, but in this case...not buying it from the agent. Sweeney should be fired for not signing Swayman to two years out of arbitration as this would all be moot and they would have a year to find out just how good Swayman is with a true #1 workload.

That being said, you can't ignore Swayman's part in all of this. He has come out and said in interviews that he wants to make sure goalies going forward are paid well and that is part of his contract position. He has also routinely made his point about being upset with the arbitration process last off-season (that he asked for)...guess he figured the team would offer nothing but glowing reports to support their lower than his ask offer? Yes he is an outstanding goalie and should be paid well, but to compare his body of work to the guys paid above him and say he is equivalent or even worth more by all reports (the $9.5M to $10M per reports)? Tall ask in my opinion.

I'm not sure how you have a problem with this part. Just not into free enterprise I guess?

What reports have been confirmed that 9.5-10M is his number? Reply with links or corroborated stories and not emotion or conjecture.

The kid is 25/26 years old, to me it would make sense to lock him in with a palatable number and term given the age. If you bridge him, he plays lights out then Shesterkin and Sorokin do what they're rumored to do, what then? You want to pay 8X12 in 3 years? Also keep in mind the cap is projected to rise and the reward of the risk is he becomes a bargain.

You still don't have a #1D
You still don't have a #1C
Marchand won't be around and will need to be replaced SPOILER: It's not coming from the system. This group has proven time and again they cannot identify top talent other than goalies.

You certainly have some weird vendetta against McaVoy right now. He didn't have his best series against the Panthers but he is still one of the best defenseman in the NHL. Pretty easily. What does McAvoy not do well?

On no planet, is McAvoy not a #1 DMan.

Elias is also a pretty underrated #1C.

Not really man. Go team by team and look their top D. A lot of teams do not have a bonafide #1D and the ones that do are better players than McAvoy. He is top 4 D absolutely but a true #1? A Makar, Doughty, Petrangelo, Hedman, Josi, Heiskenen... I don't think so.

Also Elias is widely regarded league wide as a 2C. Best available Center on the market so full credit for getting him. But similar to McAvoy. Looks across the league, he's a cut below in most cases.

Not a problem with free enterprise at all, just don't think he is worthy (at this point, based on body of work) to be the highest paid goalie which is what "setting the standard" essentially means. No quotable, verifiable, official reports for the numbers other than rumors (which go both ways for the supposed low ball offers from the Bruins) but that is where "setting the standard" would fall...simple logic.

The problem I have with setting the standard (for any player) is that it drives a much larger have's and have not's scenario in the NHL (or any other sport with a hard salary cap...okay, pretty much just the NHL) and not really sure why the PA would want that. Much less money to go around for the "average" player. As far as the cap going up, there is no guarantee of that. We are nearing the potential lockout/strike zone of the CBA and if either of those happen the cap will freeze for quite some time.

Of course the fact that Sweeney overpaid for each of his White Whale acquisitions this off-season doesn't help one bit...

I'm sorry but I will not fault Swayman one bit here. Sweeney has been playing mind games with Swayman for a few years now.

-When Rask tried to come back and Swayman was playing better than BOTH Rask and Ullmark, the result: Swayman gets sent down. (Ok, we will give Sweeney a pass because swayman was on a two way deal with no waivers. )

-Next year Swayman splits time, does well. Ullmark has a vezina year. Sweeney loads up on free agents and doesnt have a ton of money left. (not a lot to begin with because of overages) Swayman goes to arbitration and they throw swayman a lowball team offer. Swayman awarded his 3.4m or whatever, then Sweeney CHOOSES to only take a 1 year contract when he could have had two. (I think most of us agree that was a mistake)

-This past season Swayman plays lights out hockey. He is the only reason the Bruins make it to the second round in the playoffs. Was there an attempt at a "hand shake" deal in negotiations during the year? No. How about after they were eliminated? Nope. Sweeney waits until AFTER he trades Ullmark to begin the process of negotiations. Then proceeds to sign expensive free agents, leaving what he thought should be enough for his prized goalie. (You could argue the optics of not having a deal done by free agency speaks more to the priorities of the GM)

EDIT: They have also fired a shot saying Korpisalo is the opening night starter no matter what. So if I'm Jeremy Swayman I certainly dont feel great about my standing with management and now have to defend my negotiations to a fanbase who now thing I'm just a greedy bastard.

Taken individually, it can be forgiven. Taken together its a trend of behavior that says Swayman has not been Sweeney's #1 priority for years. This press conference and Neely's unprofessional remarks just reinforce this idea. Its sad and stupid.

He is still in the conversation with all of those players. He is about as well rounded a defenseman as any in the league.

I did yeah. Absolutely love it up here. Although I have no idea how I'm going to watch the games. Leaning towards Fubo.

I'm not saying McAvoy is a bad Dman or trying to make him out to be Cody Ceci. I just currently don't believe he's "the guy"

The problem with "that part" is it has nothing to do with Boston.

Swayman can have empathy for other goaltenders - but not at the Bruins expense.
He should ONLY be concerned about what is a fair deal for him.

Setting the bar for other goaltenders should not factor into this equation.
