Zone Exits

If there’s one bad thing to dwell on through these first five games, it’s the zone exits. There are too many failed exits from the defensemen to start this season. It hasn’t burned them too badly, but it’s going to soon if it’s not cleaned up.

Two of the defensive prospects Vsevolod Komarov and Nikita Novikov are some of the worst offenders in this category. I don’t have a lot of issues with them in the offensive zone, but defensively it hasn’t gone great.

You can see in the early season data above they carry two of the three highest failed exit rates and the two lowest controlled exit rates on the team in the games I’ve tracked.

Komarov, you can understand as a rookie trying to get used to the speed. I hope to see that improve as the season goes along. As for Novikov, this was an issue for a lot of last season too. He’s never going to be excellent in this area, but there still needs to be improvement. He opts to just fire the puck up the walls blindly instead of picking his head up when he has time to find a teammate.
