Per Jason Mackey: Sid has been on the ice for more high percentage goal chances against than any player in the league. |

Just got home from my son's hockey practice. We gave up 19 shots in the first? F it, let's go for the shots-against record tonight. - MickV

Well, he made AAA peewee this year -- but he back checks too well to play for them. |

My younger son is a goalie. He loves when his team stinks because he just like seeing shots. Doesn't care about the score, just likes making saves.
His favorite game last year was when his AA team played a AAA team and lost 10-0, but he made 65 saves on 75 shots (I watched the game back on LiveBarn just to count the SOG, and it was really 75.) All the other kids were upset after the game because they got crushed, but my kid was so happy that he saw 75 shots.
This year his team is defending really well. He has 3 shutouts in a row but keeps complaining about not seeing enough shots. |

Pens players would rather slam on the brakes and fall into the boards rather than hit a guy. It has to be coached. |

Incredibly disingenuous to say Jarry had “little leverage” in summer 2023. He was a UFA and Pens had no other starting goaltender option unless it was going to be via trade. Ned was coming off a horrible year with Detroit and Blomqvist had yet to play a season in the AHL. It’s a lot easier to be a GM in hindsight. - abasin
You never give the best free agent forward or dman 7 years at 10 million just because he’s the best free agent of that year and you need that position or your gonna get burned. You especially definitely don’t do that for a goalie. It was a horrendous move from dubas and was from day 1. The season before he was a FA he was like 3.00 GAA and .908 save percentage….. you DO NOT sign that for 5 years at 5.5m if you don’t think he’s your #1 for sure. Sign 3 backups if need be and wait for a prospect, trade or next season for a #1 to pay in free agency.

Have to at this point. You can't fire the whole team besides the goalie. |

Big ups to Pettersson for that, didnt need to fight. I truly think, and not to sound like grinder, we need some bigger guys that can hold their own. We will have more games like this and you dont want liberties being taken or something stupid happening.
But this team has made a few things obvious.
1) This team's stars have no interest in winning, they just care about playing their way
2) No coach is going to make a difference, firing Sully would be like fixing the plumbing on the titanic before it sank
3) No future assets should be wasted on this group this season
4) No idea why he'd want to resign, but if he does, I'd talk to him about trading him and then resigning him in the summer
5) Blom is the guy and Ned is the backup. Sending Jarry home on the roadtrip against his hometown team and where he played juniors sums up what Sully thinks of him.
6) Dubas has been handcuffed to an extent but there are numerous big mistakes he has made with this team and structure.
7) Penguins Twitter is unbearable. Fans that clearly never watched this team before 2007.
Having said all that, I am sure we will fire Sullivan and then go on to win the Cup. |

I think you underestimate the impact a coaching change can make. Accusing Crosby, Malkin, and Letang of not caring about winning is insane. These are some of the more competitive guys in the whole league, especially Crosby and Letang. |

Sullivan isn't going anywhere for two years; this isn't a coaching problem anymore.
In two years' time this will be a whole new team. The only players left will be Blomqvist and St. Ivany. And that's only if Dubas brings in some muscle. You can't have McDavid taking baseball swings at a guy at the end of a 4-0 game. Or letting Nurse pick a fight with your top trade piece after one of their guys fell down for umpteenth time.
That's the first thing that needs done. We can unload a couple guys who aren't going to get you a decent draft pick for some scrappers. Then when guys like Pickering, Koivunen, McGroarty and such start coming up they won't be targets. |

That's a big assumption that the Pens will unload all their big contracts by then. |

Malkin's contract is up in two years. It's over.
Jarry has played his last game for the Pens.
Karlsson should be traded this season. He has to want to play for a contender at this point in his career.
Rust and Rakell, same as Karlsson except trade them next year. They'll be tougher to move, true but they'll want out.
Crosby and Letang maybe they finish their contract, maybe not. Either way their roles will be diminished. |

I do agree with you on a few thing, but I do not think Jarry played his last game. I think they are going to give him some time then put him back out there to get his trade value up.
We can only hope that they trade Karlsson.
I have been wondering if Toronto would do a trade centered around Liljegren and Karlsson. Maybe if we move Jarry and open up a little cap space. Maybe a Tavares a pick and Liljegren for Karlsson and Acciari? Tavares played well at LW a few seasons ago when Dubas was their GM. Plus it allows us to Dump Karlsson and gain extra cap space this offseason.

The move the Pens need to make above all others is to fire Dubas. In part because Dubas has failed to make the move he needs to do in firing Sullivan.
The Karlsson trade hasn't worked, but give him a pass for trying. I'm fine with the Guentzel trade, even if I didn't love it. The Graves contract & the Jarry contracts have turned out terrible. We have an $8M 4th line and a bottom 6 forward on the top line. We traded a stud in Yager (7g 14p in 7 whl games) for a malcontent with less upside in McGroaty (0p -3 in 3 AHL games).
Sadly I understand that Dubas is going nowhere until the economics of firing him make more sense. Dubas and Sully aren't going anywhere until fans stop showing up at the gates. He inherited a roster that had holes but a solid chemistry, right now this roster is best described as a cluster(frank). |

I think it will play out a little differently. Some of these guys will stick around because not only are their contracts difficult to move, but the team will need to stay at the floor. Maybe someone like Rust or EK end up being moved after the Pens eat some salary. But guys like Jarry and Graves I don't think go without sweeteners that they won't do if they start a rebuild.
Crosby and Letang could get interesting. |
