My opinion on JD. I think the kid is playing with zero confidence. Reason I’m saying this is, he’s not using his best attribute, his skating. Whether it’s from the losing situations he has been in or all the setbacks from his injuries. Probably now, he might be afraid to just make a mistake under the defensive structure that Torts demands.
He seems as if he wants to get rid of the puck quickly after he receives it with open ice in front of him. He’s not doing much skating by people. I would like to see him use that skating ability and take the puck down the wing and back people up some, maybe create an opportunity for others down the middle or entering the zone late. Who knows, he might not have the green light to do those things. If not, why? We’re not going anywhere. If by playing more he regains some mojo, take the reins off and let’s see what he has. Seems there is more there than we’re seeing.
