There are many factors to the Flyers struggling to score. Not bearing down on high danger chances. Center play. Lack of transition play by the defense and playing too conservatively as a team in order to try and compete. Which is on Tortorella. - MJL
That’s it right there. They are a horrid team to watch. |

Ya some games are really hard to watch….the one thing you notice when you add a guy like Michkov is how the Flyers really lack elite skill everywhere else. I mean Konecny has his moments, although yesterday he treated the puck like a hand grenade. Foerster and Tippet have not been consistent in there games at all….but honestly that’s pretty much the entire forward core.
I can’t really signal one or two guys out and say that I’m being objective. The one thing I agree with Torts on is that they just need to stick with it. Yes they aren’t a great team….but they are not this bad. |

It's amazing when his confidence wanes how bad he can be. He just in one of those funks along with the rest of the forwards. Foerster skates like a lost puppy dog sometimes. His skating stride is just awkward. |

Exactly, in this situation, focusing on one player is not being objective. Doesn't mean that any one player who is being singled out is above or not deserving of criticism. What I disagree with is the idea that the solution is to just stick with it. That's a coach that is out of bullets. The Flyers started out poorly both offensively and defensively. Tortorella's counter to that was to play more conservatively defensively. Believing that and focusing on areas such as defensive tracking, 3rd man high becoming even more conservative on staying above the puck would spur offense. It won't. The NHL is way to structured and too good for that. A heavy team such as Boston just shellacked them in terms of scoring chances but just didn't have much finish. The next teams they face can do the same thing but are better offensively.

I’m sure Torts has done plenty of positive things, but when the team is bad it’s hard to think of any.
They lack talent. I don’t blame the coach for that. They play a boring style of hockey. I think it’s ok to blame the coach for that. |

I would argue they are that bad. I'm not just looking at a slow start to the season. I am including the collapse at the end of last season. The only notable addition is Michkov and Kolosov. It is painfully obvious that the Flyers need an upgrade at the center position. So what do they do they resign Koneckny.
I like him as a player but he is a luxury they can't afford.
If and when injuries start to happen and guys miss a few games here and there they have minimal depth to stop the bleeding.
I can deal with a real bad year if it means a top five or better yet top three pick. If they are bad and a low to mid teen pick i can't say ii will watch many games.
Torterella has to go and its becoming more apparent as this season goes along.

The stick with is more of a mind set…lol…of course the coaching staff should be tweaking certain things to help. I don’t know if Torts has lot of cards left to play? I said a while back that I thought some guys were tuning his message out…then for a few games they seemed to at least row in the right direction defensively. They got some solid goaltending and appeared to somewhat”right” the ship or at least plug the hole. What’s concerning is the teams strength is the W position. They have six what I would call solid options or at least young guys that should be playing and have room to grow. Of those 6 only Konecny and Michkov get a passing grade so far. That’s a problem. |

Offensively, the two most important positions for driving offense are the center position and the defense. The Flyers don't have enough play driving defenseman. The loss of York and having to elevate Ristolainen makes that worse. Andrae has helped a little but he's not on the ice enough or playing with the right players enough. Couturier has had some games and has played decent overall. Unfortunately right now, the Flyers are getting nothing from Frost offensively at 5 on 5. That's where they have to improve right now and hopefully from that, wingers such as Tipett, Farabee and Forester will improve. They also have to be better themselves. This is team wide and not about an individual player and everybody's favorite scapegoat. I assure you though that the solution is not to play more conservatively. Which is what Tortorella has done. That will only stifle offense further. |

I could be proven wrong saying they aren’t this bad. It really shows that the NHL is a league where by you have to be strong down the middle and on the back end. The Flyers have addressed both area’s in the draft the last two years but those guys are no where ready….and aren’t what I would call the “answers in waiting”. But they are guys that should help down the road. |

You could be but I would agree with you that they shouldn't be this bad. That they should improve from where they are now. The only caveat to that would be goaltending. If Ersson misses significant time or falters, then they probably will remain this bad.

- MJL I disagree with you. The only chance they have right now is to play conservatively. They can't run and gun with anyone at this point. Get back to their basic defensive systems and hope the offense comes along. If they try to play run and gun with their next 3 opponents they will get blown out of the building, especially if Ersson isn't in net. I mean, it's boring as hell, but it's their only chance. |

You're not thinking clearly. Only chance for what? To do what actually? What is more important for this team? To dummy it down in hope of competing this season when they have no realistic chance. Or to continue to build on the small improvements they made last season in being a more competitive team? In 22/23, the Flyers played very conservatively and finished in the bottom of the league. In 23/24, they played more aggressively and were competitive in most games despite still finishing in the bottom third of the league even with the late season slump. The Flyers start out slow this season and Tortorella's response is to play more conservatively defensively and change and mix up lines at a ridiculous level. All the while in press conference saying that they have to stick with it. Is he sticking with it? I would say no. The biggest issues is the play of the players but he has not done a good job coaching to this point. In fact I would say he's been panicking. The correct approach would be to stick with how they played last season and try and build on that. Coach them through it instead of worrying about winning. |

Torts is gonna coach to give the team the best chance to win. I hate the way Torts is juggling the lines and he needs to stop, but playing conservatively until some of these guys get out of their slumps is almost a must. Look at their record since they went conservative. Hell, even in yesterday's game they had chances. Frost needs to bury that point blank chance! Boston was on a mission yesterday (losing 8-2 Thursday) and they were gonna shut it down. The Flyers don't have any finishers or they certainly could have had a different outcome yesterday. Oh, and that first goal was a softie. They have to play this way for the time being or they will get blown out by the next 3 teams on the schedule. |
