Every year (the past 8 or so) the leafs get 90 - 105pts blah blah blah.
The true tale of if this leafs team is better, will be what they do in the playoffs.
Can they make it past 5 games in round 2, can their core players score when it counts (elimination games), can they play this shut down style in the playoffs.

- Fakepartofme

add:
Can the goaltending not give up a few horrible goals
Can the team stay away from key injuries or suspensions

I haven't logged into my account for many years but alas this column has brought me back.

Mike - I was a religious listener to Leaf Talk as a child, typically listening on my transistor radio after my bed time. Each night I waited for "good evening Mr. Frost" to hear your thoughts, insights, and various grievances (Aki Berg and "#55" come to mind). I remember how excited I was when I saw you'd be writing for this wonderful little corner of the internet that I used to spend a ton of time on.

I've been following you ever since - from Hockeybuzz to The Sporting News to The Hockey News. I've been a listener of The Leafs Convo since its inception. I was a listener to Blue and White Tonight from the beginning. I even listened to that old Talkshoe show. You would have seen me in the comments.

It's been a long journey, about 18 years. I'm almost 30 now. It's been impressive to see your career progression since the Leaf Talk days. I'm excited to see what's next. All the best.

Good for them. A solid goalie and not much else. Not impressed. Imo nothing more than an average team that is even worse than our flops in the playoffs.

The Jets are definitely buoyed by Hellebuyck - without him they're arguably not even a .500 team. Of course I think discounting the impact of a goalie is silly when you're looking at the entirety of a team in the cap world. You make decisions as to where to put your money and if you invest in a good goaltender - who performs as expected - then you're getting or exceeding value in that investment.

For instance the Jets are +9 in goal differential, but almost all of that is attributable to Hellebuyck. Right now in the league, based on a minimum of 9 games the top goalies are Dostal (Ana), Hellebuyck (Wpg), Stolarz, Shesterkin (NYR) and Oettinger (Dal). The worst ones dragging their teams down are Georgiev, Nedelkovic, Ingram, Skinner and Annunen. Given that Georgiev and Annunen are both on Colorado, it would seem team defense is likely more of a culprit.

Anyway my real point is that discounting Hellebuyck isn't really painting a good picture of the Jets. What is curious about them is that they haven't played particularly well, but they have Connor, Ehlers, Shiefele, Vilardi, Lowry, Perfetti, Iafallo and then on their backend Morrissey, DeMelo and Pionk are all pretty good players. I like the Jets and think they could play more consistently and yet still put up worse results than their lucky start would indicate - but it would make them more dangerous in the long run.

His $2.1m is so little that it doesn't do much, really. Because you can't accrue space while using LTIR, they either bring Jarnkrok out of LTIR and go with an $85m roster (+Jarnkrok) for accrual, or they leave him in LTIR for the space usable at the TDL - but it's still limited to the $2.1m - and that presumes you can get your salaries as close to $88m to maximize Jarnkrok's LTIR space.

Leafs medical staff get him healthy for February and then Dubas trades for him at the TDL for a late round pick.

I will bet on it that it happens.

Sports hernia surgery is a 2-3 month recovery. He will be healthy for February.

Every team has good players. The Jets best players don't move any needle aside from a goalie. Leafs have been a solid easy in playoff team despite, or, in spite, of goaltending. Goalies have come and gone and the regular season success remains consistent. Basically what I'm saying is...The Jets are a hellybuck injury away from being a poop team. Leafs lose a 60 goal scorer to injury and don't miss a beat. Can the Jets be as good as they've been without that one player? I would bet a pretty penny against it.

Jets and Wild flying out of the gate was clearly unsustainable over the course of 82 games.

My picks went 50/50 last night. Tool did better than I did.

CAR - STL : STL (Sorry Bingo!)
WSH - VGK : WSH
NYR - SEA : NYR
NAS - VAN : VAN

CAR - STL : STL - wrong
WSH - VGK : WSH - correct
NYR - SEA : NYR - correct
NAS - VAN : VAN - wrong

Friedman's of the belief that the Cap will be 97M next year and suggests that it could be (optimistically) as much as 110M the year after. Alot of that could be coming out of the PA side but there is lots of pent-up revenue after the escrow pay-backs.

Just some context ...McDavid's 12.5M would be ~ 18M if that were true.

Marner at 12.5M or even 13M doesn't sound so bad if that is even close to being true.

I dont know about the above, ive watched a few jets games this year and they have many players that move the needle. Imo
Conners 6'1 256pts in 244 games
Ehlers 6' 174 pts in 207 games
Scheifele 6'3 231 pts in 240 games
Morrissey 6' 199pts 256 games
Pionk 6' 117pts in 239 games.

Stats are from the past 3 years and this year, all of these players would move the need on most teams....including the leafs.
Hellybuyck is a big reason the jets are they are (just like the leafs are where they are due in large part to stolarz) but i beleive they also have a winning record without helly and i think they are first in goals for and pp. They'll come back to earth soon....which was 110pts last year and 95 the year before.
