Hossa was signed when the basic framework of the team was in place. This Chicago team is at least three years away from where the 2009 team was Hossa joined them.

I was just about to say this. No patience by this group.

If it was 2 to 3 years down the road sure but many forwards haven't even scratched the surface yet.

There's always a reason...... let me know when 23-25 yr old guys hit UFA and are plentiful. Look forward to that. By the time that happens, Bedard will be "too old" per your math.
- SteveRain

When Chicago are ready to compete in a few years there will be similar players to Rantenen and Marner available, who will both be in their 30s and potentially be on the downside of their careers. Patience Steve, it’s not about getting Bedard 30 goals it’s about building towards being competitive for a championship in at least five years.

See that's the issue you just want success for Bedard, i want Cups, in 2 to 3 years Ranty will be 31 years old and he's no Hossa.

Why does that matter at all? MR is a great player and was available now. You can't wait until all your prospects are good and then say, OK now is the time to go get my big time FA. What do you do if there isn't one available for signing or trade? The Hawks have plenty of prospects, draft picks and cap space. They are losing Foligno and Richardinson after next year.

They don't have to spend to the cap next year, but adding a true top liner to this team would do wonders for their development.

It matters in that Rantanen will be 34 or 35 if the Hawks are contending by then. Regardless how you spin it, he’s on the downside of his career at that age. Also factor in his presence forces KD to expedite the rebuild possibility forcing players to forgo AHL development.

As I said before in three years, when the Hawks should have most of the prospects on the team, a Marner or Rantanen type will be available, like there is every season.

It’s a moot point anyway Rantanen isn’t coming and there was no chance he would sign here right now and there’s no chance Marner will sign here.

If the Hawks aren't contending (and by contending I mean beyond just squeaking into the last playoff spot) before Rantanen is 34 or 35 (6-7 years from now) then KD will be gone and the team will likely be turned upside down anyway. You can get this team to playoff level in relatively short order (2 years) without handcuffing the cap or their assets, especially considering how much they have at the moment of each.

You are right, it is a moot point right now, but that doesn't mean that KD shouldn't be looking to add a significant piece this offseason.

Veleno signed for next season and then RFA. Assume that means he replaces Maroon for next season

That’s not bad. That uncomplicates the goalie situation and KFC also did right by Mrazek sending him to a place he’s familiar with.

I know there were a number of people who wanted Veleno at the end of the first when the Hawks had two picks and that was before Stanbo decided to draft bigger dmen.

Pretty sure Veleno was in the draft that we took Nicolas Beaudin toward the end of the first.

Good deal for Stars. Wyatt should ask for that over 3yrs. Nill is crushing it today. Very jealous

Veleno has size and some speed, just doesn’t put up points. Rather have that than Maroon on the fourth line.

Yeah, the poop of it is that TOR took Rasmus Sandin two picks after Beaudin.

Same year we picked Boqvist and then, can’t recall if we took Mitchell in that draft but none of them ever really panned out. I believe Boqvist got picked up by the Isles but injuries and not being very good at defense have never seen him rise to the level I imagine Bowman envisioned when he picked him.
